many variations on a theme!\u00a0 If using frozen cherries, make the sauce first and refrigerate.\u00a0 It should be cold to make the trifle.\u00a0 The quantities do not have to be exact &#8211; this dish was invented using leftovers from tea.\u00a0 Some suggest making it in a large dish, single layer for easier serving.\u00a0 Useful, but not as impressive!<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<p><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>1 9 x 13 chocolate cake, chocolate pound cake, or brownies cut into 1 inch cubes<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 c Cherry Herring liqueur (In a pinch use Amaretto but it is not nearly as good.)<\/li>\n<li>4 pkg (3.9 oz) instant chocolate pudding<\/li>\n<li>6 c cold milk or even better 1\/2 and 1\/2<\/li>\n<li>1 qt (4 c) whipping cream \u2013 whipped<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 c powdered sugar<\/li>\n<li>1 tsp almond\/vanilla extract<\/li>\n<li>3 cans cherry pie filling (or, be really fancy and use frozen dark cherries &#8211; see Note)<\/li>\n<li>1 c toasted almond slivers and\/or chocolate shavings<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Directions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Whip the cream.<\/li>\n<li>Add the powdered sugar and almond extract.<\/li>\n<li>Pave the bottom of a straight sided glass bowl with half the cake. \u00a0Make sure it goes all the way to the sides of the bowl so it will show when done.<\/li>\n<li>Sprinkle with half the Cherry Herring.<\/li>\n<li>Mix the instant pudding with the milk\/1\/2&amp;12.<\/li>\n<li>Layer half the pudding on the cake. \u00a0Again, go all the way to the side of the bowl.<\/li>\n<li>Spoon on half the pie filling\/ fruit.\u00a0 Make sure it is up to the side of the bowl.<\/li>\n<li>Spoon on half the whipped cream.<\/li>\n<li>Place the remainder of the cake, pudding, fruit and whipped cream in layers in bowl.<\/li>\n<li>Sprinkle the almond and \u00a0chocolate on top.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Serves:<\/strong>\u00a0\u00a030 \u00a0You want a LARGE (like 12 inch) tall glass bowl for this.<\/p>\n<p><b>Source<\/b>: \u00a0<strong>\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>A riff on Sunset Cook Book\u2019s recipe<\/p>\n<p><strong>Note:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Frozen Cherry Sauce<\/p>\n<div class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredients-container wprm-block-text-normal\">\n<div class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient-group\">\n<ul class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredients\">\n<li class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient\"><span class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient-amount\">4 1\/2<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient-unit\">c<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient-name\">frozen cherries (about 50 oz\/3+ lbs)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient\"><span class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient-name\">4 c of the syrup from the<\/span><span class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient-notes wprm-recipe-ingredient-notes-normal\">\u00a0frozen cherries (If not enough add water to make 4 c)<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient\"><span class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient-amount\">3\/4 c<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<span class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient-name\">granulated sugar<\/span><\/li>\n<li class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient\">3\u00a0<span class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient-unit\">tablespoon<\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"wprm-recipe-ingredient-name\">cornstarch dissolved in 1\/2 cup water<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wprm-recipe-instructions-container wprm-block-text-normal\">\n<div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-group\">\n<ol class=\"wprm-recipe-instructions\">\n<li class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\">\n<div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\">Place the cherries, sugar and the syrup in a saucepan.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\">\n<div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\">Bring to a boil.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\">\n<div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\">Simmer for another 3 minutes.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction\">\n<div class=\"wprm-recipe-instruction-text\">Stir in the cornstarch mixture, stirring continually until the sauce is thickened, about 1 minute.<\/div>\n<\/li>\n<li>Cool before adding to trifle.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Another trifle &#8211;
