They did everything on the ship &#8211; set sails, swab decks and cook.<\/i>\u00a0 There were frequent calls for recipes.\u00a0 This is one of them.\u00a0 It was the beginning of our family cook book &#8211; The Blue Book.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ingredients:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>2 lb fresh bulk sausage<\/li>\n<li>1 c rice<\/li>\n<li>1 can chicken gumbo soup (Margie used Cream of Chicken.\u00a0 Celery or mushroom would work too)<\/li>\n<li>a spoonful or two of ketchup<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 tsp chili powder<\/li>\n<li>2 c water<\/li>\n<li>(Margie added a bag of frozen spinach)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Directions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Preheat oven to 350\u00b0.<\/li>\n<li>Break up the sausage in a frying pan.<\/li>\n<li>Brown well.<\/li>\n<li>Drain off fat.<\/li>\n<li>Stir in rice.\u00a0 Add soup, ketchup, chili powder, and water (and spinach).<\/li>\n<li>Mix well.<\/li>\n<li>Place in casserole.<\/li>\n<li>Cover tightly.<\/li>\n<li>Bake for about 40 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Serves:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>8-10<\/p>\n<p><strong>Source:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>An old newspaper recipe Margie found tucked in an old cookbook.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Margie was in college she spent a summer in\u00a0Woods Hole\u00a0\u00a0Massachusetts on a program called Sea Semester.\u00a0The class included a 6 weeks on land and 6 week sail to New England, Canada, and the Grand Banks on a 125 ft Staysail Schooner.
