{"id":11002,"date":"2007-04-28T12:36:34","date_gmt":"2007-04-28T19:36:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2007\/04\/28\/drawing-the-line.html"},"modified":"2007-04-28T12:36:34","modified_gmt":"2007-04-28T19:36:34","slug":"drawing_the_line","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2007\/04\/28\/drawing_the_line.html","title":{"rendered":"Drawing the line"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"img-shadow-right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"The Shield of the Episcopal Church\" height=\"54\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/images\/episc-shield.jpg\" width=\"52\" \/><\/div>\n<p>For all the various conservative primates in the Anglican Communion have called on the Episcopal Church to return to traditional ways, to listen to the recommendations of the Windsor Report, and behave in&nbsp;a collegial and communal fashion, some have been more than happy to do precisely the opposite in pursuit of Episcopal dioceses and parishes in the US, seeking to &#8220;poach&#8221; them in a way that is against Anglican tradition, against the Windsor Report, and both non-collegial and un-communal.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, we now have Archbishop Akinola, head of the Church of Nigeria, coming to the US to ordain a&nbsp;bishop in CANA, the Nigerian Anglican mission church they&#8217;ve set up in the US.&nbsp; And, at long last, the Episcopal Presiding Bishop&nbsp;(the same as an Archbishop, but without pretensions of royalty)&nbsp;is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/04\/28\/washington\/28church.html?_r=1&amp;ref=africa&amp;oref=slogin\" target=\"_blank\">speaking out against it.<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Katharine Jefferts Schori, the presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, said in a statement that Archbishop Akinola\u2019s acceptance of \u201can invitation to episcopal ministry here without any notice or prior invitation\u201d was not in keeping with \u201cthe ancient practice in most of the church\u201d that bishops minister only within their own jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis action would only serve to heighten current tensions,\u201d the statement said, \u201cand would be regrettable if it does indeed occur.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cThe archbishop of Nigeria may think the Episcopal Church has acted wrongly, but that is quite different from using that as an excuse to cross boundaries and do things that violate longstanding practice,\u201d said the Rev. Mark Harris, a member of the Executive Council, which governs the Episcopal Church between the conventions it holds every three years.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Harris, associate priest at St. Peter\u2019s Church in Lewes, Del., said Archbishop Akinola \u201cis making clear that he considers the church in Nigeria is not in communion with the Episcopal Church.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The conservatives are pooh-poohing all this, asserting that these are parishes and individuals and so forth who already feel alienated from the Episcopal Church, so they need (or want) to provide an alternative.&nbsp; Which makes me wonder how Abp.
