I&#8217;ll wait.  If you want a more approachable version (though <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0451628047\/qid=1003251043\/sr=8-1\/ref=sr_8_3_1\/102-4268631-8380951\">John Ciardi&#8217;s translation<\/a> is quite fine), you can read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0671670557\/qid=1003251119\/sr=1-2\/ref=sr_1_10_2\/102-4268631-8380951\">Niven and Pournelle&#8217;s novel<\/a> by the same name.<\/p>\n<p>Done?<\/p>\n<p>Okay &#8212; then let me ask you this.<\/p>\n<p>Does Dante have an appropriate bolgia (circle) for parents who let their children come into danger?  Not, mind you, by accident.  But by neglect.  By selfishness.  By a focus on only what is useful or pleasant or convenient to them, the parents (singular or plural).<\/p>\n<p>How about parents who manipulate their children, not even for any possibly laudible reason like, &#8220;Well, this will be for his\/her own good,&#8221; but to score points?  To satisfy an internal ego-trip?  To &#8220;win&#8221; against someone else?  For trivial, selfish reasons?<\/p>\n<p>How about just because they&#8217;re stupid, narrow-minded and petty?<\/p>\n<p>The Ninth Circle, in Caina, where <b>Traitors to Kindred <\/b>are embedded in ice up to their necks for all eternity?<\/p>\n<p>Seems kind of harsh.  On the other hand, seems kind of lenient.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the answer is, it <i>seriously<\/i> chaps my hide.  Want to see my blood pressure <i>seriously <\/i>rise?  Want to watch me rant and rave?  Tell me about stuff like this.<\/p>\n<p>Rrg.
