{"id":11236,"date":"2007-10-16T10:03:30","date_gmt":"2007-10-16T17:03:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2007\/10\/16\/potpourri-for-the-feast-of-st-gerard-majella.html"},"modified":"2007-10-16T10:03:30","modified_gmt":"2007-10-16T17:03:30","slug":"potpourri_for_the_feast_o","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2007\/10\/16\/potpourri_for_the_feast_o.html","title":{"rendered":"Potpourri for the Feast of St. Gerard Majella"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tabs are getting full again &#8230;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> Who was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.catholic.org\/saints\/saint.php?saint_id=150\" target=\"_blank\">St Gerard Majella<\/a>?<\/li>\n<li> Though this article focuses on Mormons vs non-Mormons, I think it has a lot to say about <a href=\"http:\/\/oneutah.org\/2007\/10\/06\/talking-across-the-divide\/\" target=\"_blank\">discussion of &#8220;moral&#8221; issues across the board<\/a> between a variety of groups.<\/li>\n<li> Dentists are making lots of money and working fewer hours.&nbsp; But it&#8217;s all due to growth of cosmetic dentistry &#8212; and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/10\/11\/business\/11decay.html?_r=3&amp;ei=5090&amp;en=90706e3e81ffd582&amp;ex=1349755200&amp;adxnnl=1&amp;oref=slogin&amp;partner=rssuserland&amp;emc=rss&amp;pagewanted=all&amp;adxnnlx=1192500180-ayVo6PLv4XdLirx9ob14\/A\" target=\"_blank\">affordable dental care for the poor is actually getting more difficult to find<\/a>.&nbsp; Rates of <em>untreated <\/em>cavities in the US are actually going up,&nbsp;&nbsp;Disgusting. <small>(via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kottke.org\/remainder\/07\/10\/14267.html\" target=\"_blank\">kottke<\/a>)<\/small> <\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"http:\/\/ap.google.com\/article\/ALeqM5hVWTJEsSIC5Bf0Mu72MxMAROtwowD8S1CAU80\" target=\"_blank\">Set course for that asteroid, Mr Sulu!<\/a> <\/li>\n<li> Is your site <a href=\"http:\/\/blogoscoped.com\/archive\/2007-10-05-n60.html\" target=\"_blank\">blocked in China<\/a>?&nbsp; I&#8217;m somehow disappointed that mine isn&#8217;t.<\/li>\n<li> Wish I had $8K for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2007\/10\/12\/vatican-publish-knig.html\" target=\"_blank\">this new collection of Vatican documents about the Knights Templar<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li> The Religious Right is disappointed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/10\/07\/weekinreview\/07goodstein.html?_r=5&amp;adxnnl=1&amp;oref=slogin&amp;adxnnlx=1192450363-4NYUCR0FmBH%2bpEXp9fNzOw&amp;oref=login\" target=\"_blank\">they&#8217;re no longer the top dogs on the political agenda<\/a>.&nbsp; Huzzah.&nbsp;&nbsp;They&#8217;re worried (finally) that they&#8217;re just seen as an assumed\/presumed voting bloc on the GOP side, regardless of how they&#8217;re treated.&nbsp; Almost certainly true.&nbsp; Welcome to the consequences of&nbsp;mixing worldly&nbsp;and&nbsp;spiritual interests.&nbsp; (I refuse to use the term &#8220;values voters&#8221; because, dammit, <em>every <\/em>thoughtful voter is voting on their values, right, left, and center.)&nbsp; Beyond that &#8212; their days may be limited as well, as their population is aging, and&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/dneiwert.blogspot.com\/2007\/10\/roosting-chickens-part-ii.html\" target=\"_blank\">younger generations are more critical of religion&nbsp;in general and Christianity in particular<\/a>, almost directly because of all the right&#8217;s political shenanigans and generally &#8220;un-Christian&#8221; attitudes,<\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denverzoo.org\/about\/news.asp#zebra\">Baby Zebra!<\/a> <\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newscientist.com\/article\/mg19626252.800\" target=\"_blank\">How does it feel to die?<\/a>&nbsp; Not surprisingly, it depends on the cause.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li> The NSA has a big advantage &#8212; for the moment &#8212; in doing wiretaps, given <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/politics\/security\/news\/2007\/10\/domestic_taps\" target=\"_blank\">the huge volume of international phone and network traffic that routes through US-based equipment and hubs<\/a>.&nbsp; That&#8217;s beginning to change, both as other location begin to compete and as other countries and companies begin to mistrust such US-based hubs.<\/li>\n<li> <a href=\"http:\/\/media.guardian.co.uk\/broadcast\/story\/0,,2182137,00.html?gusrc=rss&amp;feed=4\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Doctor Who <\/em>movie?<\/a>&nbsp; Fantastic!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tabs are getting full again &#8230; Who was St Gerard Majella?
