{"id":11357,"date":"2007-09-13T12:38:02","date_gmt":"2007-09-13T19:38:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2007\/09\/13\/a-manly-man-doing-manly-things-with-other-manly-men.html"},"modified":"2007-09-13T12:38:02","modified_gmt":"2007-09-13T19:38:02","slug":"a_manly_man_doing_manly_t","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2007\/09\/13\/a_manly_man_doing_manly_t.html","title":{"rendered":"A Manly Man Doing Manly Things with Other Manly Men!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/stupidevilbastard.com\/index\/seb\/comments\/my_score_on_popular_mechanics_list_of_25_skills_every_man_should_know\/\" target=\"_blank\">Les<\/a> points to a <em>Popular Mechanics <\/em>article on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popularmechanics.com\/blogs\/home_journal_news\/4221635.html\" target=\"_blank\">25 Skills Every Man Should Know<\/a>.&nbsp; How many of them do I know?&nbsp; Let&#8217;s see.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> <b>Patch a radiator hose<\/b> &#8211; I&#8217;ve not done it.&nbsp; I think I could do it, if it&#8217;s of the nature I think it is.&nbsp; I&#8217;m going to count it.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Protect your computer<\/b> &#8211; Been there, done that.&nbsp; Multiply.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Rescue a boater who has capsized<\/b> &#8211; I believe I could do this.&nbsp; Life preservers, life vest, rope, gaff sticks, or even just (I think) swimming.&nbsp; Certainly I&#8217;d give it the old college try.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Frame a wall<\/b> &#8211; I&#8217;ve done nearly the equivalent with our cabinet-making, so I think I could do tihs.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Retouch digital photos<\/b> &#8211; I do it regularly.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Back up a trailer<\/b> &#8211; Been there, KOAed that.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Build a campfire<\/b> &#8211; And lay a good fireplace.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Fix a dead outlet<\/b> &#8211; Done it.&nbsp; Of course, I&#8217;ve also caused small electrical fires at times (though only with switches, not outlets).&nbsp; I prefer not to, but if it&#8217;s just a matter of replacing an outlet, I can do it.&nbsp; In fact, I&#8217;ve done it many times&nbsp;in upgrading from traditional vs. Decora outlets around the house.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Navigate with a map and compass<\/b> &#8211; Get around in a car?&nbsp; Yeah.&nbsp; We talking being out in a field with a topo map and a compass?&nbsp; Been quite some time, but I think I could get there alive.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Use a torque wrench<\/b> &#8211; Frequently.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Sharpen a knife<\/b> &#8211; Done that.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Perform CPR<\/b> &#8211; I&#8217;ve trained, but it&#8217;s been a while.&nbsp; I could be coached, but I&#8217;m not sure I could do it.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Fillet a fish<\/b> &#8211; I wouldn&#8217;t trust any fish I filleted. Fortunately, it&#8217;s not a circumstance I&#8217;ve ever found myself in or think I will be.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Maneuver a car out of a skid<\/b> &#8211; I&#8217;ve done that, successfully and unsuccessfully.&nbsp; I&#8217;ll count that as a win.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Get a car unstuck<\/b> &#8211; Done it, and aware of the basic principles and tactics.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Back up data<\/b> &#8211; Do it in various ways &#8212; not as often as I should (who does?).<\/li>\n<li> <b>Paint a room<\/b> &#8211; Done it.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Mix concrete<\/b> &#8211; I&#8217;ve done it in small batches for fence foundations, and the fence is still up.&nbsp; I&#8217;ll take it as a win.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Clean a bolt-action rifle<\/b> &#8211; I have no doubt I could do it, with instruction, but I wouldn&#8217;t know how to start.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Change oil and filter<\/b> &#8211; I&#8217;ve done it before.&nbsp; Not for many years, and that by choice.&nbsp; I would want some instructions, but &#8230;<\/li>\n<li> <b>Hook up an HDTV<\/b> &#8211; I&#8217;m pretty confident I could &#8212; I&#8217;ve certainly screwed around with every other A\/V configuration we&#8217;ve had.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Bleed brakes<\/b> &#8211; No clue.&nbsp; Nor would I trust a car I tried it with.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Paddle a canoe<\/b> &#8211; I&#8217;ve done it, though not lately.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li> <b>Fix a bike flat<\/b> &#8211; Done it before.<\/li>\n<li> <b>Extend your wireless network<\/b> &#8211; Hell, I&#8217;ve been asked by friends to work on it for them.&nbsp; Boo-yah!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So that&#8217;s 21 of 25, making me 84% of a Manly Man, I guess.&nbsp; Much handier (or claiming to be) than I would have guessed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Les points to a Popular Mechanics article on 25 Skills Every Man Should Know.&nbsp; How many of them do I know?&nbsp; Let&#8217;s see.
