{"id":11463,"date":"2007-08-22T15:30:28","date_gmt":"2007-08-22T22:30:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2007\/08\/22\/bacon-bacon-bacon.html"},"modified":"2007-08-22T15:30:28","modified_gmt":"2007-08-22T22:30:28","slug":"bacon_bacon_bacon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2007\/08\/22\/bacon_bacon_bacon.html","title":{"rendered":"Bacon-bacon-<i>bacon!<\/i>"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"img-shadow-right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Spam, spam, spam, spam ...\" height=\"104\" alt=\"spam\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/images\/spam.jpg\" width=\"104\" \/> <\/div>\n<p>Doyce notes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.average-bear.com\/archive\/009538.html\" target=\"_blank\">the New Slang of the Week<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><font color=\"#000000\"><\/p>\n<p><strong>Spam <\/strong>= Email you don\u2019t want.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Bacon <\/strong>= Email you want, but not right now (google alerts, newletters, mailing list messages, etc).<\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And, yes, as he suggests I&#8217;ll argue that <em>bacon<\/em>, per se, is rarely something I don&#8217;t want right now, but <em>bacon<\/em>, in this context, is indeed a problem.&nbsp; It&#8217;s &#8220;information overload.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>So, for example, looking at my Google inbox &#8212; and bearing in mind that I&#8217;ve tossed most of the spam that wasn&#8217;t already caught, I have:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> Some ads\/announcements from companies (e.g., Amazon) that I actually buy things from (so it&#8217;s not really spam).<\/li>\n<li> Some e-mail from some friends\/family that&#8217;s very low priority to read.<\/li>\n<li> Some newsletters\/mailing lists I do want to get around to reading, but not right now.<\/li>\n<li> An update from a site about the quality of Katherine&#8217;s school.<\/li>\n<li> Various e-mail exchanges from people I do want to talk with and would like to pay attention to as soon as updates come in.<\/li>\n<li> Some bill notifications that I need to review at some point, but not right now.<\/li>\n<li> Quite a few other things I want to look at, but not right now.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The problem is, how do I get the stuff I really want to read (let&#8217;s call it the <em><strong>fillet<\/strong><\/em>, since we&#8217;re on a meat kick immediately visible and read, without letting the <em>bacon <\/em>sink into obscurity such that it never gets read.&nbsp; That&#8217;s an extension of the problem of cutting out the <em>spam <\/em>but not the <em>bacon<\/em>, but it&#8217;s even more immediate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The fact is, I get more e-mail that probably should be read than I can (or want to) read.&nbsp; That&#8217;s a personal time management issue, to some degree.&nbsp; But it&#8217;s also a reality.&nbsp; What I need is a personal assistant that&#8217;s quite a bit brighter than a spam filter or folder filter to go through and prioritize my e-mail for me.&nbsp; Unfortunately, GMail&#8217;s filters (and pretty much any other e-mail system I&#8217;ve seen that works on a keyword basis) isn&#8217;t up to that.&nbsp; We need a mail system that watches behavior and draw conclusions:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li> Dave reads mail from these people as soon as it comes in.&nbsp; Make it high priority.<\/li>\n<li> This mail gets left around for a while.&nbsp; Make it medium priority.<\/li>\n<li> Dave reads this e-mail, sooner or later, before it gets deleted.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li> Dave saves this e-mail for a while, but&nbsp;eventually deletes it.<\/li>\n<li> E-mail with these subject lines&nbsp;gets read faster than e-mail with these subject lines.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>etc.<\/p>\n<p>Heuristics.&nbsp; Bayesian filters (in reverse).&nbsp; Whatever.&nbsp; We need smarter software (or smarter people).<\/p>\n<p><u>UPDATE<\/u>:  According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.boingboing.net\/2007\/08\/22\/bacn_spreads_around_.html\">BoingBoing<\/a>, it&#8217;s actually &#8220;bacn.&#8221;  Don&#8217;t ask me why &#8212; I guess it sounds 1337.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p><\/font><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Doyce notes the New Slang of the Week: Spam = Email you don\u2019t want.
