I’m sure that’s not quite what Dubya meant, but it’s amusing to hear his comment<\/a> in a Fox News interview: “You’re the pundit. I’m just a simple president.”<\/p>\n

Heh.<\/p>\n

Actually, what’s interesting to me is how active a role that Bush is already taking in this Presidential campaign. Though he’s not endorsed either McCain or Huckabee (I think he’s hoping beyond hope that Huckabee will get the nod), he’s already beginning to snipe at both Clinton and Obama.<\/p>\n

It’s usually interesting watching the dancing around between the departing incumbent and the party nominee. The latter usually wants to draw on the same forces that elected his predecessor, and may even want to bask in the glory of said predecessor. But he always wants to be seen as his own man, too, and there’s always something he wants to disassociate himself from.<\/p>\n

Most importantly, the outgoing Prez usually focuses on the business at hand and, for fear of jinxing things, usually doesn’t get too involved in the election, except to support his party’s choice in whatever way he’s asked to.<\/p>\n

So do you think McCain, or the GOP, have been asking Bush to start taking shots at the Dems? And how independent will the Administration and the Campaign be this time out? The bad feelings between Bush and McCain are legendary — and I don’t see Dubya as being willing to go softly into that sweet night, or for the Decisionator to defer to his erstwhile rival. And while McCain won’t want to alienate the GOP base more than he already has, if he’s going to appeal to the Independents, he’s going to have to tread a little carefully in being seen as “Bush’s Successor.” <\/p>\n
