{"id":12066,"date":"2007-11-26T16:07:19","date_gmt":"2007-11-26T23:07:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2007\/11\/26\/kindling.html"},"modified":"2007-11-26T16:07:19","modified_gmt":"2007-11-26T23:07:19","slug":"kindling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2007\/11\/26\/kindling.html","title":{"rendered":"Kindling"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So the other shoe dropped with Amazon announcing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/article2\/0,2704,2219176,00.asp\" target=\"_blank\">a full-blown eBook reader and service called &#8220;Kindle.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s two barriers, to my mind, in the adoption of eBooks &#8212; at least for me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Technology<\/strong>:&nbsp; I need something that is as easy and portable and fast to use as a paperback book.&nbsp; The Kindle&#8217;s stats sound good, and, hey, it would be nice to have a bunch of books with me on an airplane or business trip.&nbsp; Still, is it actually as easy to use (and read from) as a paperback?<\/p>\n<p>For that matter, if I lose a paperback, or misplace it around the house, I can grab another one off the shelf.&nbsp; If I lose my Kindle, I&#8217;m hosed until I replace it.&nbsp; Hrm.&nbsp; A single point of failure is not a good thing.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ownership<\/strong>:&nbsp; Amazon lost me here when they started talking about a proprietary format.&nbsp; I don&#8217;t want a proprietary format &#8212; I want something that will read anything out there that I can download.&nbsp; It&#8217;s also not clear with the article what the level of &#8220;ownership&#8221; of the purchased books \/ magazines is.&nbsp; What do I <em>really<\/em> own for my $9.99?&nbsp; Does that ownership last only as long as Amazon decides to support the system?&nbsp; Could my purchased library vanish overnight?&nbsp; Will it be compatible with Kindle 2.0?&nbsp; Will it be compatible with another, better reader?&nbsp; Will my kids be able to inherit my collection?&nbsp; Can I give a book I&#8217;ve &#8220;bought&#8221; to someone&nbsp;else?&nbsp; Or loan it?<\/p>\n<p>Paperbacks, even hardcovers, may wear out, or get lost, or get damaged.&nbsp; But, by God, you <em>own<\/em> that sucker, and can take it anywhere, and do anything you want with it.&nbsp; Until an eBook reader can do that, for the same price, and with advantages beyond&nbsp;saving luggage and shelf space, I&#8217;ll stick with analog, thankyouverymuch.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So the other shoe dropped with Amazon announcing a full-blown eBook reader and service called &#8220;Kindle.&#8221; There&#8217;s two barriers, to my mind, in the adoption of eBooks &#8212; at least&#8230;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_seopress_robots_primary_cat":"","_seopress_titles_title":"","_seopress_titles_desc":"","_seopress_robots_index":"","_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","jetpack_publicize_message":"","jetpack_publicize_feature_enabled":true,"jetpack_social_post_already_shared":false,"jetpack_social_options":{"image_generator_settings":{"template":"highway","default_image_id":0,"font":"","enabled":false},"version":2}},"categories":[36,20],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-12066","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-media-books","category-hi-tech"],"jetpack_publicize_connections":[],"jetpack_featured_media_url":"","jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"jetpack-related-posts":[{"id":14019,"url":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2009\/03\/04\/size-does-matter.html","url_meta":{"origin":12066,"position":0},"title":"Size does matter","author":"***Dave","date":"Wed 4-Mar-09 8:10pm","format":false,"excerpt":"Got the newest Jim Butcher Dresden Files book out in paperback --\u00a0Small Favor -- today in the mail from Amazon, and ...
