{"id":12140,"date":"2007-11-07T10:22:20","date_gmt":"2007-11-07T17:22:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2007\/11\/07\/tv-im-watching.html"},"modified":"2013-06-04T15:11:48","modified_gmt":"2013-06-04T21:11:48","slug":"tv_im_watching","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2007\/11\/07\/tv_im_watching.html","title":{"rendered":"TV I&#8217;m Watching"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"img-shadow-right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"TV!\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/images\/tv-philco-predicta.jpg\" width=\"144\" height=\"183\" \/><\/div>\n<p>We watch about 90-95% of our TV off of our DVR, which seems fairly remarkable.\u00a0 So what is it I&#8217;m watching these days?<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Torchwood<\/strong>:<\/em>\u00a0 This <em>Doctor Who <\/em>spin-off has developed a sort of dark charm of its own.\u00a0 It&#8217;s as much Horror as SF, and is usually focused as much on the characters (or the folks they encounter) as on the Monster\/Widget of Week.\u00a0 It&#8217;s complex enough to be still finding its feet, and I&#8217;m okay with that.\u00a0 I look forward to this one every week.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>House, MD<\/strong>:\u00a0 <\/em>I watched a bit of this at the tail of last season, and fell in love with it.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure why a medical mystery show starring as thoroughly unpleasant a doctor as you can imagine appeals so much.\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s because of the reactions of the people around him. Maybe it&#8217;s because Hugh Laurie is a delight to watch.\u00a0 Maybe it&#8217;s because his passion to defeat disease, not help people, makes for a nicely un-Marcus-Welby sort of tale.\u00a0 Whatever, it&#8217;s great fun.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve even picked up the Season 1 DVD set &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Chuck<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/em> It&#8217;s geeky.\u00a0 It&#8217;s action-ish.\u00a0 It&#8217;s alternately poignant and funny and thrilling.\u00a0 It&#8217;s\u00a0half Bond, half Dilbert.\u00a0 <em>Chuck <\/em>is\u00a0not without flaws, but I enjoy watching this computer-nerd-turned-spy series a lot.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Bionic Woman<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/em> This show wants to be Alias so hard it hurts.\u00a0 But the characters aren&#8217;t nearly as good, the writing isn&#8217;t nearly as taut, and the overall story isn&#8217;t nearly as good.\u00a0 The acting is pretty good, bound as it is by a thousand stereotypes in writing and not terribly impressive direction.\u00a0 This is most likely to go on the personal chopping block first, but I keep hoping.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Dinner: Impossible<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/em> Watching the chef thrown into one improbable and difficult situation after another &#8212; make [meal] for [lots] with [limited ingredients, dubious staff, sketchy facilities, etc.] in [the next few-to-several] hours &#8212; remains a lot of fun.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Daily Show<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/em> Jon Stewart is a national treasure, as are the writers and fellow cast of the show, as they lampoon the day&#8217;s news and try to see how seriously they can treat serious subjects while still causing tons of laughter &#8212; or how humorously they can treat serious subjects while still causing folks to think.\u00a0 Triffic stuff.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The Colbert Report<\/strong>:\u00a0<\/em> Following on TDS, Colbert is amusing, but much more one-note (faux conservative) in its town than its parent show.\u00a0 Still lots of fun to watch.<\/p>\n<p>Alas, a number of the above have been &#8212; The Daily Show and\u00a0The Colbert Report &#8212; or will be &#8212; House, Chuck, Bionic Woman &#8212; impacted by the ongoing Writers Strike.\u00a0 Aside from L&amp;O and Star Trek reruns, I may have to dig into the TV schedules again to see what else I should be watching.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We watch about 90-95% of our TV off of our DVR, which seems fairly remarkable.&nbsp; So what is it I&#8217;m watching these days?
