A deeply philosophical and gentle man, his professed monastic life had some mysterious inconsistencies in it over the course of the tragically short-lived series, hinting at a much dark, violent, and significant past.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Mal<\/strong>: It&#8217;s of interest to me how much you seem to know about that world.<br \/> <strong>Book<\/strong>: I wasn&#8217;t born a shepherd, Mal.<br \/> <strong>Mal<\/strong>: You have to tell me about that sometime.<br \/> <strong>Book<\/strong>: [<i class=\"fine\">pause<\/i>] No, I don&#8217;t. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We never found out in <em>Firefly <\/em>(or <em>Serenity<\/em>) what Book&#8217;s actual background was. But &#8230; next up in the Firefly comic miniseries from Dark Horse, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.comicmix.com\/news\/2008\/06\/13\/interview-scott-allie-on-shepherd-books-serenity-spin-off-and-solomon-kane\/\" target=\"_blank\">we&#8217;re going to finally learn about it<\/a>. I&#8217;m not going to quote from the interview with Scott Allie since there are a few (tiny) spoilers.
