{"id":12574,"date":"2008-03-21T14:08:38","date_gmt":"2008-03-21T21:08:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2008\/03\/21\/because-of-course-all-those-government-files-are-safe-and-secure.html"},"modified":"2008-03-21T14:08:38","modified_gmt":"2008-03-21T21:08:38","slug":"because_of_course_all_tho","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2008\/03\/21\/because_of_course_all_tho.html","title":{"rendered":"Because, of course, all those government files are safe and secure"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If passport files for folks like Obama, Clinton, and McCain are subject to casual (for fun? for political reasons?) <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.wired.com\/27bstroke6\/2008\/03\/state-dept-all.html\" target=\"_blank\">unauthorized<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/feeds\/ap\/2008\/03\/21\/ap4802301.html\" target=\"_blank\">perusal<\/a> by government&nbsp;employees, officials, contrators, whatever &#8212; in some cases the notification taking months to come to senior officials official attention &#8212; then why should we trust that any of our data will be &#8220;safe&#8221; or &#8220;secure&#8221; or &#8220;tamper-free&#8221; or &#8220;protected from unauthorized access&#8221;?<\/p>\n<p>Any time someone makes those promises about a Big Government Database (be it passports, homeland security, medical records, whatever), remember that.<\/p>\n<p>Not that such databases don&#8217;t have some value, or that we shouldn&#8217;t necessarily have them, or that we can&#8217;t&nbsp;work to minimize&nbsp;those risks. But unrealistic promises and iron-clad assurances and paternalistic head-patting should be laughed at any time provided.
