I won’t be home at 7 p.m., alas … so I’ll have to DVR-blog after I get home from karate. A few last minute items re the debate:<\/p>\n

  1. After initial attacks in the debate moderator, PBS anchor Gwen Ifill, for “hiding” that that she was writing a book about blacks in politics that was admiring of Barack Obama (despite the fact that the news accounts of the book were out weeks before the McCain camp signed on with the moderator list), McCain yesterday said he was sure she would be “totally professional.” That was followed by a further McCain statement that he was sure she would be “totally professional,” but that it was unfortunate that she was selected, but that (heavy sigh) “life isn’t fair.” That was followed today by dire threats that Ifill will destroy her professional reputation and career if she isn’t <\/em>totally professional<\/a> (by which I assume they mean “a sympathetic softball lobber to the Divine Ms. Sarah”). Nice.<\/li>\n

    Latest Palin strategy prediction — it doesn’t make any difference whether she’s knowledgable or clever or anything, as long as (a) she hammer home that horrid “Joe Sixpack<\/a>” image, and (b) she has some zinger lines that can dominate the news cycle tomorrow<\/a>. And we know she can deliver zinger lines, with or without coaching.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

    As to the coaching … can a candidate be surreptitiously coached remotely with answers and information? The debate folks fight to make sure it can’t happen, but others aren’t so sure<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
