Probably the most sane thing I've seen on the Middle East in a long time.<\/p>\n

Neocon sentiment that the US has to do "something" or else be seen as weak and that the only "something" worthwhile has to involve making things go boom and having boots on the ground is, as suggested, remarkably short-sighted if meant seriously.<\/p>\n

(It would be taken more seriously if any of those jokers or their immediate families were likely to be among those boots.)<\/p>\n

That Vladimir Putin is admired for throwing his nation's scarce wealth into conflicts like these (and damned what gets broken in the meantime) will, I predict, be looked at fifty years from now the way we look at the leaders who admired Messrs. Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin for making the trains run on time and restoring their nations' internal pride through foreign adventurism.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
