{"id":1293,"date":"2002-01-31T07:02:22","date_gmt":"2002-01-31T12:02:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=1293"},"modified":"2002-01-31T07:02:22","modified_gmt":"2002-01-31T12:02:22","slug":"a_dismemberment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2002\/01\/31\/a_dismemberment.html","title":{"rendered":"A dismemberment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The legal beagles at the firms who hold all the rights to the Bond series of movies, have gotten <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eonline.com\/News\/Items\/0,1,9430,00.html\">a cease-and-desist order<\/a> from a film industry panel against the producers of the Austin Powers film for their use of the title <i>Goldmember<\/i>, a take-off on the Bond title <i>Goldfinger<\/i>.  As a result, the Powers crew are scrambling for a new name &#8212; and scrambling to snatch up any <i>Goldmember <\/i>promotional materials (here&#8217;s your chance for a collector&#8217;s item, kids).<\/p>\n<p>Mixed feelings here.  Frankly, I thought the first AP film was humorous, and the second overkill.  The third &#8230;?  <\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, this is <i>satire<\/i>, folks.  The MGM\/Danjaq folks didn&#8217;t object to <i>The Spy Who Shagged Me <\/i>(vs the Bond <i>The Spy Who Loved Me<\/i>), even though that one ran into legal troubles in countries where &#8220;shag&#8221; is a much more improper term.  I&#8217;m curious that the plaintiffs went to the MPAA board, rather than to court, too &#8212; is that traditional with these sorts of disputes, or did they think they&#8217;d face less of a burden in their case against New Line there?<\/p>\n<p>MGM and Danjaq have every right to protect the value of their property.
