She also demonstrated, as a businessperson, why she finds <a title=\"Palin Scrubbing Turns Up a Car Wash | The Trail | washingtonpost.com\" href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/the-trail\/2008\/09\/02\/palin_scrubbing_car_wash.html#\">government regulation oppressive<\/a>. She was also a tough &#8212; even vicious &#8212; <a title=\"Mayor Palin: A Rough Record -- Printout -- TIME\" href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/printout\/0,8816,1837918,00.html\">political fighter<\/a>&nbsp;during the campaign, and ruthless against her enemies after she won. Oh, and she thinks banning books is keen, and heaven help you if you don&#8217;t go along with that.<\/li>\n<li> She <a title=\"Palin And The AIP: Update\" href=\"http:\/\/obsidianwings.blogs.com\/obsidian_wings\/2008\/09\/palin-and-the-a.html\">did <em>not <\/em>belong to the secessionist Alaska Independence Party (AIP)<\/a>&nbsp;&#8212; though her husband did, she hung out with them, and as governor she send a nice recorded greeting to their convention.<\/li>\n<li> Palin absorbs foreign policy knowledge by <a title=\"Osmosis\" href=\"http:\/\/obsidianwings.blogs.com\/obsidian_wings\/2008\/09\/osmosis.html\">osmosis<\/a>. Never work for me in college, but, heck, more power to her.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Given that one of the most important things a president gets to do is appoint key advisors and functionaries and officials of the government, one would think that the process used in selecting Palin as the most qualified person to&nbsp;step into John McCain&#8217;s shoes should&nbsp;<a title=\"Why It Matters\" href=\"http:\/\/obsidianwings.blogs.com\/obsidian_wings\/2008\/09\/why-it-matters.html\">matter<\/a>, regardless of the blustery denials of it being slapdash, capricious, or solely about identity politics, or the mantra-like assertions that Palin has extensive executive experience, not to mention national security chops.<\/p>\n<p>But, of course, all of this <em>doesn&#8217;t <\/em>really matter. As the McCain campaign itself notes, this election &#8220;<a title=\"McCain Manager: 'This Election is Not About Issues' - The Fix\" href=\"http:\/\/voices.washingtonpost.com\/thefix\/2008\/09\/mccain_manager_this_election_i.html?hpid=topnews#\">is not about issues<\/a>.&#8221; It&#8217;s about personalities, and making people Trust Your Side and Mistrust The Other Side. There&#8217;s a certain degree of truth there &#8212; and both sides play that game. But issues should, <em>must <\/em>matter, and the Republican essential abandonment of them except as they sow fear, uncertainty, and doubt at the Dems is reprehensible.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll see how folks feel after the Great, Bright, Shiny, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/26520727\/\" target=\"_blank\">Highly-Rehearsed-and-Wordsmithed<\/a> Palin Speech at the RNC convention tonight.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>So here&#8217;s more that we know: Palin&#8217;s time as mayor was demonstrated she was for earmarks before she was against them.
