Cap is a tough character to write. Make him just an action hero, and he doesn't serve much purpose. Make him a patriotic character, and he seems like a cornball. Make him a mockery of a patriotic character, he becomes eyerolling and dull.<\/p>\n
The current crop of Marvel movies has stuck a pretty good balance. Chris Evans comes across as earnest but not truly naive, determined without going all grimdark, patriotic without cardboard polemic, and conflicted without being overly angsty. He … well, what I would want from an actual Captain America.<\/p>\n
Other renditions of Cap over the years in TV and movies haven't always been quite so successful, too often throwing us generic muscle men, buffoonish flag-wavers, or jingoistic brutes. And, as this shows, doing the whole shield-slinging thing is hard.<\/i> Even the MCU movies have problems with it at times, and the pre-CG era (live action and cell-painting animation) really struggled.<\/p>\n
