Moore, as Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, had told lower courts in Alabama that they could — in fact, had to — ignore the SCOTUS Obergefell<\/i> ruling that said preventing same-sex marriage was unconstitutional. He was suspended for the rest of his term by the state's own judicial ethics body, which declined to take sides on the issue, but basically said, "No, you can't ignore the Supreme Court of the United States."<\/p>\n

Moore's previous stint on the bench was also cut short in 2003 when he refused to take down, under federal order, a Ten Commandments display in his court.<\/p>\n
