There's always danger when a show undergoes significant change. The shift of Supergirl<\/i> from CBS to the CW, the move from Hollywood to Vancouver, and the announced cast changes, all had me a bit worried.<\/p>\n

If the first episode of the season (which we finally got to last night) is any indication, there's no need to worry yet.<\/p>\n

Two elements stand out. First is Tyler Hoechlin showing up as Superman, the elephant in the room (or at least in Metropolis) during the first season. He made a welcome appearance in the season opener, adding to the ensemble and action rather than overwhelming it. Rather than Kara feeling like a second fiddle or sidekick to the Man of Steel, she felt like a partner (and his reaching out to her for stories of Krypton, something he has no direct memory of, was touching).<\/p>\n

And, as my daughter put it, he felt like a much more enjoyable Superman in just a few scenes than what we got in an entire brooding mess that was Batman v Superman.<\/i><\/p>\n

It sounds like he's going to be around for a bit more of the season. I'm looking forward to it.<\/p>\n

The second element that was of concern was Cat Grant. Callista Flockhart famously wanted to stay in Hollywood, so Cat won't be a regular this season. But she will recur (with some advanced writing and occasional trips up to Vancouver), and this ep again showed why. While she first came across as the comically demanding diva boss, Cat Grant quickly evolved last season into being one of the most level-headed and clear-sighted folk on the show, counseling Kara in ways that nobody else could or would.<\/p>\n

That continued during the opener, with Cat helping Kara figure out what she actually wants to do with her (civilian) life. I thought the ultimate answer was a little goofy\/cliche, but the scenes involved were well done. Very glad Cat's going to be recurring.<\/p>\n

A few other season starters — the Kara\/Jimmy thing, the new DEO HQ thing, the intro of the Luthors (and another classic villain) were a mixed bag, but net-net, I enjoyed how it went, and I'm looking forward to more.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
