Donald Trump seems disinclined to visit the UK as he had previously said he would (and was invited to do so by the current PM). The reasons are … well, amusing, if you don't care how America is perceived abroad.<\/p>\n

'He has told his staff that he wants to avoid a marathon overseas trip like his nine-day trek to the Middle East and Europe, which he found exhausting and overly long.'<\/i><\/p>\n

Remember when Trump and his surrogates were running around making fun of Hillary Clinton as too old and frail to be President?<\/p>\n

'One other factor leading to his reluctance, said one of the officials, is his preference for having foreign leaders visit him — not the other way around.'<\/i><\/p>\n

Something I've noted before. The alpha dog awaits visitors, then graciously shows them around his golf courses and mansions and other overly-gilt properties. <\/p>\n

'But optics and politics are major considerations, too. Mr. Trump is deeply unpopular in Britain, and any visit by him — let alone a state visit with all its pomp — would probably be met with wide-scale protests. Recent polls have found that more than half of the British public views Mr. Trump as a threat to global stability.'<\/i><\/p>\n

A security concern? Nah. Trump just doesn't want news media coverage of protests against him. Even his pals at Fox & Friends find it hard to make that sort of thing look good.<\/p>\n

In short, it all boils down to Trump wanting to look important, beloved, reputable. Taking a long, tiring trip doesn't let him sparkle. Visiting other leaders' Places of Power doesn't let him look like the most important person in any relationship. Being faced with large protests doesn't make him look universally respected and beloved.<\/p>\n

As I said, it would be funny, except as it impacts the reputation and influence of the United States.<\/p>\n
