{"id":133804,"date":"2017-07-05T11:35:19","date_gmt":"2017-07-05T17:35:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2017\/07\/05\/health-insurance-reform-fact-check-round-up.html"},"modified":"2017-07-05T11:35:19","modified_gmt":"2017-07-05T17:35:19","slug":"health-insurance-reform-fact-check-round-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2017\/07\/05\/health-insurance-reform-fact-check-round-up.html","title":{"rendered":"Health Insurance Reform Fact-Check Round-Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The WaPo and New York Times [1] offer some consolidated fact-checking against GOP Senate and White House arguments against the ACA and in favor of their New, Improved AHCA insurance reform plans (&quot;Now with 9% fewer people losing their insurance than the last version!&quot;).<\/p>\n<p>From the NYT [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/03\/us\/politics\/misleading-republican-claims-health-care.html\" class=\"ot-anchor\">https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/07\/03\/us\/politics\/misleading-republican-claims-health-care.html<\/a>] on <br \/>&#8212; whether the AHCA keeps the ACA&#39;s Medicaid expansion<br \/>&#8212; whether the AHCA actually increases Medicaid funding<br \/>&#8212; whether the AHCA will reduce middle-class taxes<br \/>&#8212; whether the ACA has led to doubling and tripling of premiums<br \/>&#8212; whether the ACA actually <i>caused<\/i> a gap in Medicaid coverage<\/p>\n<p>From the WaPo [<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/fact-checker\/wp\/2017\/07\/05\/decoding-the-white-house-spin-on-obamacare-failures\/\" class=\"ot-anchor\">https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/fact-checker\/wp\/2017\/07\/05\/decoding-the-white-house-spin-on-obamacare-failures\/<\/a>]<br \/>&#8212; whether average premiums under the ACA are up 105%<br \/>&#8212; to what extent insurers are abandoning markets [2]<br \/>&#8212; how many people are dropping off of the exchanges<br \/>&#8212; how many people were penalized for not buying insurance<br \/>&#8212; how many people still don&#39;t have, or have dropped, their ACA coverage<br \/>&#8212; how much premiums have increased [3]<br \/>&#8212; whether the CBO overestimated how many people would be covered by the ACA<\/p>\n<p>That&#39;s a lot of items, though the articles are themselves pretty concise (with plenty of linked backup). I&#39;m posting them largely as reference for the future, as the assertions targeted by these items keep coming up again and again (often without detail), and being able to address them directly would be convenient.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>[1] And, yes, I know, the cries of &quot;Fake News!&quot; ring out across the land. Now grow up. If there&#39;s a presented assertion of &quot;fact&quot; that&#39;s given there that you don&#39;t like or disagree with, then check <i>it,<\/i> just as they did these GOP statements.
