Just in time for a flurry of holiday bad-picture-taking. David Pogue<\/a> offers the following tricks (go to the link for cogent explanations):<\/p>\n

  1. Half-pressing the shutter button (to prefocus) eliminates shutter lag.<\/li>\n
  2. For the blurred-background effect, back up and zoom in.<\/li>\n
  3. Force the flash outdoors.<\/li>\n
  4. Exploit the magic hour.<\/li>\n
  5. Use a lampshade socket at a tripod.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Lifehacker<\/a> (whence the Pogue article) suggests as well:<\/p>\n

    1. Exhale and pull elbows in for steady shots.<\/li>\n
    2. Use the Unsharp Mask\/Smart Sharpen for crisper shots.<\/li>\n
    3. Deal with shooting in direct light.<\/li>\n
    4. Get behind something to shoot more candidly.<\/li>\n
    5. Get a cheap, DIY lens hood or flash filter.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
