{"id":13426,"date":"2008-12-19T16:53:55","date_gmt":"2008-12-19T23:53:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/2008\/12\/19\/majel-barrett-roddenberry-rip.html"},"modified":"2013-06-04T14:44:36","modified_gmt":"2013-06-04T20:44:36","slug":"majel_barrett_roddenberry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2008\/12\/19\/majel_barrett_roddenberry.html","title":{"rendered":"Majel Barrett-Roddenberry, RIP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was sorry to hear that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0000854\/\" target=\"_blank\">Majel Barrett-Roddenberry<\/a> had <a href=\"http:\/\/popwatch.ew.com\/popwatch\/2008\/12\/majel-roddenber.html?cnn=yes\" target=\"_blank\">passed away<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>One of the things that struck me when seeing the trailer for J.J. Abrams&#8217; new <em>Star Trek<\/em> movie was that, for as much as he changed in his effort to revitalize the <em>Trek<\/em> universe, there were just enough things that he left unaltered\u2014perhaps in an effort to tacitly state, &#8220;While this isn&#8217;t your father&#8217;s <em>Star Trek<\/em>, it still is <em>Star Trek<\/em>.&#8221; Like that classic &#8220;red alert&#8221; sound. And it was also reassuring to know that Majel Barrett-Roddenberry\u2014who passed away earlier today from complications from pneumonia at the age of 76\u2014was once again the &#8220;voice&#8221; of Starfleet computers, reprising the role she had played in every iteration of <em>Star Trek<\/em> since the very first episode back in 1966.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While I never much cared for her simpering Nurse Chapel character, her pilot role as Number One had fine promise, and she made up for a lot with the marvelous character of Lwaxana Troi &#8212; not to mention, as noted, her universality as the <em>Enterprise<\/em>&#8216;s computer voice.<\/p>\n<p><object height=\"344\" width=\"425\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/fJfkYjrbPS4&amp;color1=0xb1b1b1&amp;color2=0xcfcfcf&amp;hl=en&amp;feature=player_embedded&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><object height=\"344\" width=\"425\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/H3WOY9SwyOs&amp;hl=en&amp;fs=1\" \/><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><\/object>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She also had a (not at all mentioned, sadly, in any of the IMDB tributes I waded through) regular role voicing Lt. M&#8217;Ress on the animated <em>Star Trek<\/em>.
