{"id":137336,"date":"2018-10-17T11:46:45","date_gmt":"2018-10-17T17:46:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2018\/10\/17\/the-coal-must-flow.html"},"modified":"2018-10-17T11:46:45","modified_gmt":"2018-10-17T17:46:45","slug":"the-coal-must-flow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2018\/10\/17\/the-coal-must-flow.html","title":{"rendered":"The Coal Must Flow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Apparently Trump&#39;s plans to support coal and nuclear plants by executive fiat have run into the problem that it will actually cost <i>money<\/i> &#8212; and customers, utilities, and federal agencies are all reluctant to do so.<\/p>\n<p>So the newest scheme is that, instead of saying that coal is essential for our national grid (since the DoE&#39;s own information says otherwise), Trump wants to export coal to Asia for <i>them<\/i> to burn. The problem is, none of the West Coast states want to have coal export facilities built there, both because of immediate pollution concerns and because of long-term climate impact.<\/p>\n<p>So Trump&#39;s administration is now proposing to turn <i>naval bases<\/i> into coal exporting facilities, because they kinda-sorta get to ignore environmental regulations (both state and federal, which, of course, kicks their environmental clean-up to future generations). <\/p>\n<p>The problem I see with that &#8212; aside from the US Navy probably not being thrilled about dedicating naval base space to coal export ports &#8212; is that someone will <i>still<\/i> have to pay for it.
