{"id":139029,"date":"2019-06-04T18:50:33","date_gmt":"2019-06-05T00:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=139029"},"modified":"2019-06-04T18:50:33","modified_gmt":"2019-06-05T00:50:33","slug":"the-new-cold-war-with-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2019\/06\/04\/the-new-cold-war-with-china.html","title":{"rendered":"The new Cold War with China"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mike Pompeo&#8217;s blistering condemnation of China&#8217;s past actions on this 30th anniversary of the\u00a0Tiananmen Square massacre[1] &#8212; and China&#8217;s double-barreled retort &#8212; highlight a steadily deteriorating relationship between the US and China.\u00a0It&#8217;s occasionally belied by the &#8220;Xi is my bestest friend (after Kim!)&#8221; rhetoric from the President but, coupled with the escalating trade war and tensions in the South China Sea, it&#8217;s more than a little ominous.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tiananmen-square-protester-tanks-1989.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-139030\" title=\"tiananmen square protester tanks 1989\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tiananmen-square-protester-tanks-1989-650x379.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tiananmen-square-protester-tanks-1989-650x379.jpg 650w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tiananmen-square-protester-tanks-1989-150x87.jpg 150w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tiananmen-square-protester-tanks-1989-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tiananmen-square-protester-tanks-1989-768x448.jpg 768w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/tiananmen-square-protester-tanks-1989.jpg 789w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 709px) 85vw, (max-width: 909px) 67vw, (max-width: 984px) 61vw, (max-width: 1362px) 45vw, 600px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With this President, though, one always has to wonder. Would these storm clouds disappear if China satisfied Trump on something flashy, like trade? Or, conversely, is it setting up Trump to be the Great Hero against the Chinese Menace (since support for his escalating tariffs and and their economic disruption is tepid at best)?<\/p>\n<p>In other words, how much of this is driven by authentic resistance to actual deplorable behavior by China &#8212; on human rights, on maritime law, on economic issues &#8212; and how much is a convenient excuse to beat the war drums (against yet another nation) so as to rally the country just in time for a presidential election &#8230;?<\/p>\n<p>We will, doubtless, find out in the coming several months.<\/p>\n<p><em>Do you want to know more?\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2019\/6\/4\/18651897\/pompeo-china-tiananmen-square\">Pompeo slammed China Tiananmen Square cover-up.
