{"id":14649,"date":"2009-04-28T15:22:13","date_gmt":"2009-04-28T21:22:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=14649"},"modified":"2009-04-28T15:22:22","modified_gmt":"2009-04-28T21:22:22","slug":"when-is-an-email-inbox-not-an-email-inbox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2009\/04\/28\/when-is-an-email-inbox-not-an-email-inbox.html","title":{"rendered":"When is an email inbox not an email inbox?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When it doesn&#8217;t actually contain email as most folks think of it &#8212; letters from Aunt Molly, correspondence with friends, business memos and the like &#8212; but <a href=\"http:\/\/gigaom.com\/2009\/04\/24\/why-email-clients-need-to-change\/\" target=\"_blank\">system notifications, warnings, updates, etc.<\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote dir=\"ltr\" style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\">\n<p>With every birthday reminder, bill confirmation, new friend, direct message, password recovery, and mailing list, the content of our inboxes becomes less and less a means of communication and more and more a record of all we do online. Email is the lowest common denominator of digital identity. It\u2019s our web keychain. It\u2019s the catch-all of our online lives.<\/p>\n<p>But if inboxes don\u2019t fundamentally change in order to adapt to their new role as the keeper of myriad transactions across the entire web, they\u2019ll be obsolete.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"> Yes, yes, yes. We need stuff &#8212; GMail filters, but a lot more powerful &#8212; to aggregate, filter, shuffle, analyze, and make use of all that info. We need to know about it all, and email is the way it&#8217;s getting to us. We just need a better way to turn that data into <em>information<\/em>.
