A few highlights, as cited by ThinkProgress<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\n

Why is government-run health care \u201cgood enough for the military,\u201d but \u201cnot good enough for the people of America?\u201d Stewart asked.<\/p>\n

Kristol \u2014 who has urged conservative activists and Republicans to \u201cresist the temptation<\/a>\u201d to work with Democrats in crafting health reform and instead \u201cgo for the kill<\/a>\u201d \u2014 responded that the military \u201cdeserves it,\u201d but the American people do not:<\/p>\n

\n

STEWART: Are you saying the American public shouldn\u2019t have access to the same quality health care that we give to our better citizens?<\/p>\n

KRISTOL: To our soldiers? Absolutely. [Crowd boos]<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I would agree that our soldiers deserve the very best health care. I’m not sure I can defend that they should get better health care than civilians, or that, once discharged they should (except for conditions that the VA agrees stem from their time in uniform) be stuck with civilian health care.<\/p>\n

\n

Kristol explained that soldiers get paid less, but \u201cone way we make it up to\u201d them is by giving them \u201cfirst-class health care.\u201d \u201cI feel like you\u2019ve trapped me somehow,\u201d Kristol observed. Indeed, Stewart explained the flaw in Kristol\u2019s logic:<\/p>\n

STEWART: I just want to get this on record \u2014 Bill Kristol just said that the government can run a first-class health care system.<\/p>\n

KRISTOL: Sure it can. [Crowd applauds]<\/p>\n

STEWART: And a government-run system is better than a private health care system.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Kristol tried to backtrack, saying he wasn\u2019t sure the military system is \u201cbetter,\u201d and later argued that other government-run systems aren\u2019t providing the best health care.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The problem here is that, in fact, the government military health care system isn’t always providing “the best health care” (see any number of complaints about the VA). But, then, nobody’s proposing an NHS for the population. The “marketplace of services” will remain under any current health coverage proposal. The difference being that then the government would be committed to seeing that everyone gets the basic health care they need.<\/p>\n

\n

Stewart wrapped up Kristol\u2019s argument by stating, \u201cSo what you are suggesting is that the government could run the best health care system for Americans, but it\u2019s a little too costly, so we should have the shitty insurance company health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Given that one doesn’t hear Congresscritters from the Left or <\/em>Right complaining about their <\/em>government-issued health care, I think that’s just about the size of it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
