We have appreciated you[r] patronage over the years. Thank you.\u201dThe phone wasn\u2019t answered today at the Peaberry store at 3031 E. Second Ave. in Denver\u2019s Cherry Creek North retail district.A call to Peaberry Denver headquarters today was not returned, and the \u201cLocations\u201d page of the coffee company\u2019s website \u2014 www.peaberrycoffee.com \u2014 was not available.Denver-based Peaberry Coffee is a coffee wholesaler and retailer. In 2006, the company shut down 11 metro-area stores and re-leased the space to Starbucks Corp. (NASDAQ: SBUX). The stores were located in Broomfield, Centennial, Denver, Glendale, Lakewood, Littleton, Parker and Wheat Ridge.Ten franchise stores along the Front Range were to remain open.At the time, the company said it was closing the corporate locations to focus on franchising and on retail bean sales.Peaberry Coffee was started in Denver by Bill Tointon in 1990. In addition to selling its coffee at stores, the company also sells them online. Peaberry coffees include 58th Avenue Coffee and Office Coffee.Independent coffee companies need to distinguish themselves to compete with big chains, according to Keith Herbert, founder, president and CEO of Ink! Coffee Co. of Aspen.\u201cWe\u2019re trying to be a little different, more than just a coffee shop,\u201d Herbert said. \u201cWe offer free WiFi and super-fresh coffee from Aspen, and we now take payments by phone.\u201dInk! currently has eight Colorado locations, seven in metro Denver and one in its hometown, and plans more.
