{"id":15722,"date":"2009-09-06T13:12:01","date_gmt":"2009-09-06T19:12:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=15722"},"modified":"2009-09-06T13:12:22","modified_gmt":"2009-09-06T19:12:22","slug":"health-care-reform-commentary-from-the-bible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2009\/09\/06\/health-care-reform-commentary-from-the-bible.html","title":{"rendered":"Health Care Reform commentary from the Bible"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"img-shadow-right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"Caring for the sick\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/09\/Visit-the-Sick.jpg\" width=\"252\" height=\"500\" \/><\/div>\n<p>From <a href=\"http:\/\/www.io.com\/~kellywp\/YearB_RCL\/Pentecost\/BProp18_RCL.html\">today&#8217;s Epistle<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=James%202:14-18&amp;version=NIV\">James 2:14-18<\/a>, emphasis mine)<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"MARGIN-RIGHT: 0px\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. <strong>If one of you says to him, &#8220;Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,&#8221; but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?<\/strong> In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.&nbsp;&nbsp;But someone will say, &#8220;You have faith; I have deeds.&#8221;&nbsp;Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>To my mind, provision of health care to all in our society is a <em>moral <\/em>imperative, and one that&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matt. 25:34\u201336&amp;version=NIV\">God clearly expects from us<\/a>. <em>The current for-profit system has clearly not been able or willing to do so,<\/em> to the shame of those who support the status quo and call it &#8220;the greatest health care on earth&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=James%202:1-9&amp;version=NIV\">for those who can afford it<\/a>). To Christians I would say that, if we want to dare call ourselves a &#8220;Christian nation,&#8221; but do so only based on our &#8220;faith&#8221; and not our &#8220;deeds,&#8221; then <em>we are being the very hypocrites that James condemns<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If this be &#8220;socialism,&#8221; make the most of it.<\/p>\n<p><small><\/p>\n<p>(I&#8217;m not one for arguing from Bible verse, but can do so if that&#8217;s the only way to get the message across to the target audience.)<\/p>\n<p><\/small><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From today&#8217;s Epistle (James 2:14-18, emphasis mine) Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food.
