Lovecraft transcribed the pronunciation of Cthulhu<\/i> as “Khl\u00fbl’-hloo” (IPA: <\/font><\/small>\/\u02c8k\u026c\u028al.\u026cu\u02d0\/<\/a><\/span> ?).[<\/span>4]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> S. T. Joshi<\/a> points out, however, that Lovecraft gave several differing pronunciations on different occasions.[<\/span>5]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> According to Lovecraft, this is merely the closest that the human vocal apparatus can come to reproducing the syllables of an alien language.[<\/span>6]<\/span><\/a><\/sup> Long after Lovecraft’s death, the pronunciation k\u0259-THOO<\/b><\/font><\/small>-loo<\/b><\/i><\/a><\/span> (IPA: <\/font><\/small>\/k\u0259\u02c8\u03b8u\u02d0lu\u02d0\/<\/a><\/span>) became common, and the game Call of Cthulhu<\/a><\/i> endorsed it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
