{"id":159605,"date":"2022-11-01T14:14:00","date_gmt":"2022-11-01T20:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=159605"},"modified":"2022-11-01T14:14:00","modified_gmt":"2022-11-01T20:14:00","slug":"another-look-at-colorado-ballot-propositions-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2022\/11\/01\/another-look-at-colorado-ballot-propositions-2022.html","title":{"rendered":"Another Look at Colorado Ballot Propositions 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I pretty much stand by what I <a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2022\/09\/20\/a-first-look-at-colorado-ballot-propositions-2022.html\">originally evaluated<\/a> for my votes on ballot propositions this year.\u00a0 There are two that I was not sure about, though, and one other I wanted to reevaluate.<\/p>\n<h3>Proposition 122 \u2013 Access to Natural Psychedelic Substances<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #339966;\">YES<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>One proponent framed the question very well: is adult possession of magic mushrooms sufficiently dire enough to warrant destroying someone&#8217;s life through criminal prosecution? Hard to understand how.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the critiques of the proposition are inane. &#8220;It&#8217;s fentanyl all over again!&#8221; No, it&#8217;s not, in any way, shape, or form. &#8220;Ordinary people shouldn&#8217;t do these drugs because they won&#8217;t treat them as a spiritual sacrament!&#8221; Sorry, I eat bread and drink wine, too, outside of Mass. &#8220;It&#8217;s all a Big Pharma plot!&#8221; While not discounting Big Pharma&#8217;s ability to plot, this controlled access proposal seems a reasonable first step.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll be voting <span style=\"color: #339966;\"><strong>Yes<\/strong><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Some further reading:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Colorado_Proposition_122,_Decriminalization_and_Regulated_Access_Program_for_Certain_Psychedelic_Plants_and_Fungi_Initiative_(2022)\">Colorado Proposition 122, Decriminalization and Regulated Access Program for Certain Psychedelic Plants and Fungi Initiative (2022) &#8211; Ballotpedia<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/coloradosun.com\/2022\/10\/14\/psychedelic-mushrooms-prop-122\/\">Proposition 122: Magic mushrooms are on the Colorado ballot<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Proposition 124 \u2013 Increase Allowable Liquor Store Locations<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">NO<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Basically increases the number of liquor licenses which may be held by an individual or company. I wanted to give this one another look because there are some inequities in the current law that, in the coming several years, will disadvantage independent liquor stores.<\/p>\n<p>Net-net, Prop 124 is a <strong>good<\/strong> thing if it helps local liquor stores expand and stay competitive with supermarkets, which will soon begin to get more licenses than they do. It&#8217;s a <strong>not so good<\/strong>\u00a0thing if it helps big outside liquor companies (e.g., BevMo, or Total Wine) come into the state and supplant local liquor marts.<\/p>\n<p>Give that the Trone brothers, who founded Total Wine, have each dropped almost a million dollars into this tells me that&#8217;s the intended direction.<\/p>\n<p>I think there are better ways to help local liquor stores compete, so I&#8217;m going to vote <span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">No<\/span>, but I strongly suspect that it will be voted in as a Yes.<\/p>\n<p>Some further reading:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Colorado_Proposition_124,_Retail_Liquor_Store_Licenses_Initiative_(2022)\">Colorado Proposition 124, Retail Liquor Store Licenses Initiative (2022) &#8211; Ballotpedia<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpr.org\/2022\/10\/17\/vg-2022-colorado-proposition-124-election-liquor-stores\/\">Proposition 124 in Colorado: What to know about increasing allowable liquor store locations | Colorado Public Radio<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/coloradosun.com\/2022\/10\/29\/colorado-proposition-124-liquor-stores-licenses-competition-opinion\/\">Opinion: Set same rules for big-box and local liquor stores, again<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Proposition 125 \u2013 Allow Grocery and Convenience Stores to Sell Wine<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">NO<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Should grocery stores be able to sell wine, too? (Also sake, mead, and hard cider, but wine is the biggie here.)<\/p>\n<p>The issue being presented to consumers is, of course, <em>convenience<\/em> &#8212; though the donations from Albertsons Safeway, Kroger, and Target make it clear they see it as a big windfall for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>The argument against is the impact on independently owned liquor stores. The best counter is that the same claim was made about grocery stores carrying beer, and today there are more independent liquor stores than there were when that proposition passed.
