Even me. I am so not-into the Hollywood motion picture thing, as a whole, that usually the number of Oscar Best Picture nominations I&#8217;ve seen can be counted on the thumbs of one foot.<\/p>\n<p>And even <em>I&#8217;ve<\/em> heard of Robert Redford.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the crazy thing about Robert Redford, for me, is that every time I&#8217;ve turned around since his passing was announced, I&#8217;ve been reminded of yet another film &#8212; phase &#8212; his Johnny Hookier is still getting by on that big smile and fake\u00a0<em>golly, ma&#8217;am<\/em> charm &#8212; but he plays an integral role in the amazing ensemble cast.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the opposite story with\u00a0<em>Butch Cassidy<\/em> &#8212; the film itself feels too iconoclastically 60s\/70s, defying or poking fun at all the cowboy film tropes a bit too hard.\u00a0 It succeeds because Redford and Newman (and Ross) are such charming characters.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Out-of-Africa-Robert-Redford-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-160827 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Out-of-Africa-Robert-Redford-2-197x300.jpg\" alt=\"Out of Africa Robert Redford 2\" width=\"197\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Out-of-Africa-Robert-Redford-2-197x300.jpg 197w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Out-of-Africa-Robert-Redford-2-99x150.jpg 99w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Out-of-Africa-Robert-Redford-2.jpg 236w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 197px) 85vw, 197px\" \/><\/a>It&#8217;s worth noting that\u00a0<em>Out of Africa<\/em> was the first movie I ever bought on video-tape (VHS, for the record), back in the days before I realized I shouldn&#8217;t buy sweeping, moving dramas, no matter how sweeping and moving they were, because I was unlikely ever to rewatch them.<\/p>\n<p>Handsome. Charming. Boyish. Tousled. Magnetic. Casual. Impish. Gravitas.\u00a0 All those words keep getting tossed around about Redford, and the fact is, they can all be legitimately tagged on him. Remarkable.<\/p>\n<p>I could comment more on a number of others form that<em> RS<\/em> list, but I&#8217;d like to put in my own word on a couple of Redford appearances that <em>I<\/em> know him from. And, yes, they lean on the geeky side:<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Twilight-Zone-Nothing-in-the-Dark-Robert-Redford-Gladys-Cooper.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-160825 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Twilight-Zone-Nothing-in-the-Dark-Robert-Redford-Gladys-Cooper-300x225.webp\" alt=\"Twilight Zone Nothing in the Dark Robert Redford Gladys Cooper\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Twilight-Zone-Nothing-in-the-Dark-Robert-Redford-Gladys-Cooper-300x225.webp 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Twilight-Zone-Nothing-in-the-Dark-Robert-Redford-Gladys-Cooper-150x113.webp 150w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Twilight-Zone-Nothing-in-the-Dark-Robert-Redford-Gladys-Cooper.webp 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The Twilight Zone<\/em>, 03&#215;13 &#8220;Nothing in the Dark&#8221; (1962) &#8212; And, yes, this is TV, not movies, but it still tracks.\u00a0 Redford plays a minor but essential role here as a beat cop whose shooting and mortal injuries are the only thing that can stir an agoraphobic old lady (oldies film star Gladys Cooper), who&#8217;s terrified that her apartment building home is being torn down, to reach out of her shell and reclaim her humanity.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a George Clayton Johnson <em>TZ<\/em>, so plenty of maudlin feel-good in there, but it&#8217;s also deeply moving, and Redford plays his part to a tee.<\/p>\n<p>He also looks so damned <em>young,\u00a0<\/em>which is part of the point.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Captain-America-Winter-Soldier-Alexander-Pierce-Robert-Redford.webp\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-160823 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Captain-America-Winter-Soldier-Alexander-Pierce-Robert-Redford-214x300.webp\" alt=\"Captain America Winter Soldier Alexander Pierce Robert Redford\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Captain-America-Winter-Soldier-Alexander-Pierce-Robert-Redford-214x300.webp 214w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Captain-America-Winter-Soldier-Alexander-Pierce-Robert-Redford-463x650.webp 463w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Captain-America-Winter-Soldier-Alexander-Pierce-Robert-Redford-107x150.webp 107w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Captain-America-Winter-Soldier-Alexander-Pierce-Robert-Redford-768x1078.webp 768w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Captain-America-Winter-Soldier-Alexander-Pierce-Robert-Redford-1095x1536.webp 1095w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Captain-America-Winter-Soldier-Alexander-Pierce-Robert-Redford-1460x2048.webp 1460w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Captain-America-Winter-Soldier-Alexander-Pierce-Robert-Redford-1200x1684.webp 1200w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Captain-America-Winter-Soldier-Alexander-Pierce-Robert-Redford.webp 1528w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 85vw, 214px\" \/><\/a>Captain America: The Winter Soldier<\/em> (2014) &#8212; Dismissed as a &#8220;cameo&#8221; by <em>Rolling Stone,<\/em> Redford&#8217;s Alexander Pierce calls on all his charm and gravitas to play the charismatic &#8220;World Council&#8221; coordinator and (spoilers) covert Hydra agent who&#8217;s spearheading the paranoid plot that Cap <em>et al.<\/em> have to thwart.<\/p>\n<p>I mean, it&#8217;s not\u00a0<em>Citizen Kane,<\/em> but in Redford&#8217;s hands the role and heel turn is far more central and interesting than it would have been in a more generic actor&#8217;s hands.<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sneakers-Robert-Redford-Mary-McDonnell.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-160824\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sneakers-Robert-Redford-Mary-McDonnell.jpg\" alt=\"Sneakers Robert Redford Mary McDonnell\" width=\"259\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sneakers-Robert-Redford-Mary-McDonnell.jpg 259w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Sneakers-Robert-Redford-Mary-McDonnell-150x113.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 85vw, 259px\" \/><\/a>Sneakers<\/em> (1992) &#8212; Another desert island list nominee, <em>Sneakers <\/em>is a dramedy caper flick, starring a Robert Redford who&#8217;s supposed to be looking his age playing Martin Bishop, head of a ragtag private security firm that&#8217;s hired to do &#8220;sneaks&#8221; into corporations to test their physical and (ooh!) computer security. Redford gets to work his light comedy chops here, while also taking on the serious part of a man realizing he&#8217;s frittered much of his life away, never having gotten past (emotionally or legally) his college prankster past, which is now seriously catching up with him. It&#8217;s a great ensemble cast again, with Redford at the heart of it, and I&#8217;ve watched it more times than I can count.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, that was a lot more time than I thought I&#8217;d spend thinking about Redford&#8217;s passing<\/p>\n<p><em>Thank you, sir, for many hours, past and future, of entertainment.
