I grew up on the 1964 Rankin-Bass “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer<\/a>” special, though it’s been years since I’ve seen it. This year I’m seeing commercials for a new “sequel<\/a>.” Interestingly enough, while the original was in stop-motion, this one is computer-generated. What’s fun is that the stuff that’s faithful in form to the original (they obviously didn’t get permission from the Ives estate to use “his” snow man) is remarkably good. The simple, cartoony forms of the stop-motion models lend themselves very well to CG.<\/p>\n

Not that I have any intention of sullying those childhood memories with whatever new abomination they’ve devised. But the translation of one “animation” to another is most interesting.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
