{"id":16342,"date":"2009-12-05T14:41:33","date_gmt":"2009-12-05T21:41:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=16342"},"modified":"2009-12-05T14:41:33","modified_gmt":"2009-12-05T21:41:33","slug":"great-googley-moogley-google-dns-benchmarks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2009\/12\/05\/great-googley-moogley-google-dns-benchmarks.html","title":{"rendered":"Great Googley-Moogley &#8211; Google DNS benchmarks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I ran a copy of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.grc.com\/dns\/benchmark.htm\">DNSBench<\/a> to see how the new, shiny Google DNS servers compare to other alternatives that I have.<\/p>\n<p>The short answer &#8212; meh.<\/p>\n<p>The utility lists both the DNS servers I&#8217;m using (from Comcast, at home), and a variety of other available nameservers &#8212; including (once I added them) the Google DNS servers.<\/p>\n<p>The fastest nameserver for me is the Comcast one here in Denver (68.87.85.102). Huzzah!<\/p>\n<p>The alternative Comcast name server that I get assigned through DHCP (68.87.69.150) actually resides in Beaverton, OR, and is in the middle of the pack &#8212; with both the OpenDNS servers and the Google DNS servers.\u00a0 There are 24 DNS servers listed that are faster than the secondary one.<\/p>\n<p>On\u00a0 the other hand, Comcast is one of those Evil DNS companies that, if a bad domain comes up, routes you to one of their own search pages.\u00a0 That might be enough to convince me change.<\/p>\n<p>ThePlanet.com has a couple of DNS servers that are nearly as fast as the Comcast top one.\u00a0 I might consider shifting over to them.<\/p>\n<p>Or maybe not.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, that&#8217;s how the Google DNS servers work for me.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I ran a copy of DNSBench to see how the new, shiny Google DNS servers compare to other alternatives that I have.
