Costco isn&#8217;t the only place you can go and buy stuff &#8212; if you have a favorite brand of deodorant, or a particular laptop you want to pick up, you will likely have to go elsewhere.  But if you&#8217;re looking for nuts, or jeans, or cheese, what they do have is going to be plentiful and worth purchase and cheap. You can patent a technique, perhaps, and certainly a particular technology.  But to patent genes?
