{"id":17208,"date":"2010-04-25T16:10:41","date_gmt":"2010-04-25T22:10:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=17208"},"modified":"2010-04-25T16:10:41","modified_gmt":"2010-04-25T22:10:41","slug":"my-1337-technical-skillz-or-reputation-for-same-remain-intact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2010\/04\/25\/my-1337-technical-skillz-or-reputation-for-same-remain-intact.html","title":{"rendered":"My 1337 Technical Skillz (or reputation for same) remain intact"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"img-shadow-right\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"UNIVAC 1 (LLNL)\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/univac-llnl.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"275\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Margie&#8217;s been fighting a long battle with her <a href=\"http:\/\/reviews.cnet.com\/desktops\/asus-essentio-cg5270-bp003\/4505-3118_7-33699688.html\">ASUS CG5270<\/a> computer, which has a reputation for graphic card crashes.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a good system,\u00a0 but an ongoing frustration for her.\u00a0 Most of the complaints have had to do with the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/object\/product_geforce_gt_220_us.html\">Nvidia <\/a><span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nvidia.com\/object\/product_geforce_gt_220_us.html\">GeForce GT220<\/a> video card.\u00a0 Nvidia keeps releasing new drivers, and people keep complaining about the problem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I told Margie she could have a new graphics card for Mothers Day (greater love hath no man than that he tricketh out his wife&#8217;s gaming rig), but the CG5270 comes with a 400w power supply, which is insufficient to power anything more powerful than the graphics card it comes with.\u00a0 So a new card will require a new power supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Plus, some of the forum messages indicate that an insufficient power supply might be responsible for some of thee graphics problems.\u00a0 So in either case, replacing the PSU was a prerequisite for solving the problem.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We went by Best Buy yesterday, and after tracking down the backwater shelf where the PSUs were stored &#8230; we had to decide which of the multiple brands of power supplies we wanted to get, and how big (600w? 750w? 1000w?) to get.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Okay, so it has been, of course, many years since I was seriously in the PC Tech Support Case-Cracking Hardware side of things.\u00a0 I&#8217;m okay with the\u00a0 basics, but even back in the day, I never replaced a power supply.\u00a0 (Everything in those days was made of clay and wood and used windmills for power, of course.)\u00a0 So I don&#8217;t know much about the whole power supply thing, to be honest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>We ended up with a <a href=\"http:\/\/pcper.com\/article.php?aid=690&amp;type=expert&amp;pid=3\">Corsair TX850W PSU<\/a>, figuring that would be more than enough power for her needs (esp. since the\u00a0 CG5270 doesn&#8217;t support dual graphics cards).\u00a0 And, after church today, we shut down her system, and I cracked things open. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Everything actually went pretty well at first.\u00a0 The old PSU came out with no problem (I marked where things had been connected), and the new PSU slid into place, even though an inch or two longer.\u00a0 And it had eleventy dozen cables to hook everything back to, all of them well-bound and and very pretty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The SATA drives hooked up fine, and the main motherboard connection, and even the lead to the little ASUS light in the front of the case.\u00a0 But there was still one 2&#215;2 socket on the motherboard\u00a0 that the old PSU had connected with &#8230; but I didn&#8217;t have any 2&#215;2 connectors.\u00a0 Eek!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When in doubt, go to an expert.\u00a0 I IMed <a href=\"http:\/\/stupidevilbastard.com\">Les<\/a>, and he was able to help me identify the 2&#215;4 connector that broke into two 2&#215;2 pieces, one of which did what it was supposed to do.
