{"id":17693,"date":"2010-06-30T07:13:16","date_gmt":"2010-06-30T13:13:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=17693"},"modified":"2010-06-30T07:13:16","modified_gmt":"2010-06-30T13:13:16","slug":"a-kindle-thought","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2010\/06\/30\/a-kindle-thought.html","title":{"rendered":"A Kindle thought"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Amazon-Kindle2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-17694\" title=\"Amazon Kindle\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Amazon-Kindle2-276x300.jpg\" alt=\"Amazon Kindle\" width=\"276\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Amazon-Kindle2-276x300.jpg 276w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/06\/Amazon-Kindle2.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 85vw, 276px\" \/><\/a>There are definitely times (my recent business trip\/vacation) when a Kindle would be handy.\u00a0 But <a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2009\/07\/17\/why-i-wont-be-buying-a-kindle.html\">all the practical and pragmatic problems I have with the device and its utilization and DRM<\/a> still remain.<\/p>\n<p>But &#8230; what if Amazon instead also sold Kindle downloads of books as a surcharge to hardcopies.\u00a0 So for example.<\/p>\n<p>Faboo Book (Kindle ed.): $9.99<br \/>\nFaboo Book (hardcover): $15.99<br \/>\nFaboo Book (hardcover + Kindle): $17.99<\/p>\n<p>Unless Amazon is already seeing a lot of doubled-up sales like that, the third option is a win for everyone &#8212; Amazon (more money), publishers\/etc. (more money), and customers (a hardcopy for hardcopy&#8217;s sake and permanent ownership and loanability and all that jazz; a Kindle copy for, well, the Kindle).\u00a0 And Amazon benefits even further by increasing the sales of Kindles (since folks can add the utility of a Kindle copy to their original purchase for an incremental cost).<\/p>\n<p>Heck, Amazon knows every single book I&#8217;ve ever purchased from them &#8212; why don&#8217;t they offer me a $2 Kindle version of each whenever I want it?<\/p>\n<p>The problem has been this sort of &#8220;either-or&#8221; false proposition &#8212; people either buy a &#8220;real&#8221; copy of a book, or they buy a Kindle copy.\u00a0 With this sort of deal, both options are available, and nobody loses.<\/p>\n<p>I know since the big kerfuffle a while back with one of the publishers, the T&amp;Cs by which Amazon sells Kindle copies are somewhat constrained, but I think they still have pretty much the ability to sell Kindle versions at the price point they want, so that&#8217;s not an issue.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m sure someone will note that, &#8220;Well, this lets someone buy the hardcopy and the Kindle version, then resell the hardcopy to someone else.&#8221; Um, so?\u00a0 Amazon, the publisher, and the author have all gotten their cut of both a hardcopy and Kindle copy being bought.\u00a0 I seriously doubt the used book sales in this case are going to cannibalize much from new sales &#8212; and the big fear of people being able to loan or sell their digital copies of the books stays out of the picture.<\/p>\n<p>So what important reason for Amazon et al. not to do something like this am I missing?\u00a0 It seems a natural and straightforward enough deal that I&#8217;m surprised they haven&#8217;t, so presumably I&#8217;m being myopic in one aspect of this or another.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>There are definitely times (my recent business trip\/vacation) when a Kindle would be handy.\u00a0 But all the practical and pragmatic problems I have with the device and its utilization and DRM still remain.
