Given the lowlights <\/a>of the proposed EU constitution<\/a>, and the way it basically says, “Everyone will do things the way the EU says they should be, and, oh, yeah, that includes what the non-elected EUrocrats decide,” I’m astonished that the John Aschroft is Eeeeeevil!<\/i> (which he is, but that’s another story) crowd on the Left aren’t marching in the streets in protest.<\/p>\n

Oh, yeah, they’re busy protesting the G8. And American throat-stomping imperialism. And all that. Because, after all, it’s not about liberty, it’s about goodthink<\/i> — and since the EU constitution promises that …<\/p>\n

The Union shall work for a Europe of sustainable development based on balanced economic growth, with a social market economy aiming at full employment and social progress … It shall contribute to peace, security, the sustainable development of the Earth, solidarity and mutual respect among peoples, free and fair trade, eradication of poverty and protection of human rights and in particular children’s rights, as well as to strict observance and development of international law, including respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter.<\/p>\n

… then why would anyone need to worry about things like local jurisdiction (recalcitrant nationalistic conservatism) and representative government? After all, we can always trust that governments will obey their constitutional principles<\/a>, right.<\/p>\n
