{"id":18174,"date":"2010-08-18T19:57:31","date_gmt":"2010-08-19T01:57:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=18174"},"modified":"2010-08-18T19:57:31","modified_gmt":"2010-08-19T01:57:31","slug":"time-stamped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2010\/08\/18\/time-stamped.html","title":{"rendered":"Time Stamped"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>So I&#8217;m having a couple of odd problems here at the blog &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I have two different widgets that post content here from elsewhere.\u00a0 One is the WordPress &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/crowdfavorite.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/twitter-tools\/\">Twitter Tools<\/a>&#8221; plugin, which will post a daily digest of my various Tweets.\u00a0 The other is <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.econtech.selfip.org\/2008\/10\/connecting-google-reader-and-wordpress-digest-mode-aka-daily-links-ala-delicious\/\">Digest Post for Google Reader<\/a>, which generates the Unblogged Bits from my Google Reader shares.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s part of the problem: my blog sits in the Mountain time zone (GMT-7, or GMT-6 during Daylight Saving Time).\u00a0 My blog&#8217;s servers sit in Eastern time (GMT-5\/4).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18176\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18176\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/time-tunnel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-18176\" title=\"time-tunnel\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/time-tunnel-300x237.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/time-tunnel-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/time-tunnel-160x126.jpg 160w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/time-tunnel-75x59.jpg 75w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/time-tunnel.jpg 420w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18176\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It&#39;s not quite Irwin Allen class trouble, but ...<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For some functions, WordPress pays attention to local time (there&#8217;s a setting for it an everything).\u00a0 For some functions, though, it looks at the server time.\u00a0 This sometimes causes a bit of hilarity, e.g., at the beginning of August my Twitter Tools digest would close itself off at 9:30pm MDT (when I told it to), but would queue the post to publish at 11:30pm MDT (because 9:30pm MDT = 11:30pm EDT, where the server is).\u00a0 If I wanted a Twitter digest for the day, that&#8217;s as close as I could do it, and any Tweets I made after 9:30 wouldn&#8217;t show up until the following night.<\/p>\n<p>Notice I said, &#8220;at the beginning of August.&#8221;\u00a0 As far as I can tell, as of 7 August, something changed on the server end of things, so that now the server time reflects GMT (or UTC).\u00a0 Which means it&#8217;s 6 hours off at the moment here in Denver.\u00a0 So Twitter Tools cuts off the nightly Twitter digest at 9:30pm MDT as instructed, but sets up the post to fire off at 3:00am MDT the following day, 6 hours later, complete with the next day&#8217;s date stamp.<\/p>\n<p>This is irksome.<\/p>\n<p>I have an inquiry in at the Twitter Tools support forum to see if there&#8217;s a way to fix this (the system should look at the time that WordPress recognizes, not what the server says).\u00a0 I seem to also recall there&#8217;s a way to tweak a PHP module to use a particular time zone.\u00a0 And I need to poke on the WordPress site to see if there&#8217;s a way recommended there to resolve this.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, sorry if it sometimes seems like things have egregiously offset time or datestamps.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not my intent.
