{"id":1903,"date":"2002-04-11T13:07:31","date_gmt":"2002-04-11T18:07:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=1903"},"modified":"2002-04-11T13:07:31","modified_gmt":"2002-04-11T18:07:31","slug":"gas_pumps_as_hi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2002\/04\/11\/gas_pumps_as_hi.html","title":{"rendered":"Gas pumps as high as an elephant&#8217;s eye"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There&#8217;s a big debate brewing in the Senate over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.com\/news\/736435.asp?0na=x23146E17\">mandating a significantly increased use of ethanol<\/a> in vehicle fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Pros?<\/p>\n<li>Reduced dependance on foreign oil imports.*\n<li>It&#8217;s a renewable resource.*\n<li>Help for farmers.\n<li>Corn likes to eat CO<sub>2<\/sub>.<\/p>\n<p>Cons?<\/p>\n<li>40% of ethanol production is owned by Archer Daniels Midland.<\/p>\n<p>And, perhaps, one other con, which would counter the asterisks (*) above.  Does ethanol use reduce oil imports?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe not.  As you may recall from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2002\/04\/09\/beef_its_whats.html\">beef story <\/a>&#8212; and similar stats are quoted in this news article &#8212; there&#8217;s a lot of petroleum-based fertilizer that goes into corn production.  Depending on who you believe, it actually might cost <i>more <\/i>oil to produce that ethanol than its use will save.  That leaves alone the pollution from nitrous fertilizers used in corn growing.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;d really like to believe in use of ethanol &#8212; it <i>seems <\/i>like an easy, &#8220;green&#8221; way to wean us off of petroleum.
