{"id":19197,"date":"2010-11-14T22:38:56","date_gmt":"2010-11-15T05:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=19197"},"modified":"2010-11-14T22:47:19","modified_gmt":"2010-11-15T05:47:19","slug":"shades-of-red","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2010\/11\/14\/shades-of-red.html","title":{"rendered":"Shades of RED"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Whilst Kitten was off on a Girl Scout outing, Margie and I, the afternoon free, went off and watched <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1245526\/\">RED<\/a> (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.red-themovie.com\/\">official site<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><object classid=\"clsid:d27cdb6e-ae6d-11cf-96b8-444553540000\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" codebase=\"http:\/\/download.macromedia.com\/pub\/shockwave\/cabs\/flash\/swflash.cab#version=6,0,40,0\"><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\" \/><param name=\"allowscriptaccess\" value=\"always\" \/><param name=\"src\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/39MW25N3x6I?fs=1&amp;hl=en_US&amp;hd=1&amp;color1=0x5d1719&amp;color2=0xcd311b\" \/><param name=\"allowfullscreen\" value=\"true\" \/><\/object><\/p>\n<p><object width=\"640\" height=\"390\"><param name=\"movie\" value=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/v\/q2tZf2b6yBU&#038;rel=0&#038;hl=en_GB&#038;feature=player_embedded&#038;version=3\"><\/param><param name=\"allowFullScreen\" value=\"true\"><\/param><param name=\"allowScriptAccess\" value=\"always\"><\/param><\/object><\/p>\n<p>It was, as I tweeted, a splended Bruce Willis action adventure spy comedy political violent PG-13 thriller. \u00a0Loads of fun, Margie enjoyed it, etc. Willis character is fun, as are the supporting cast, and the whole thing, while quite violent (in effect, if not in the blood-and-guts that might misguidedly warrant an R rating), is still a mildly iconoclastic romp.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I knew the movie was based on the Warren Ellis comic book mini-series. \u00a0And I said, as I watched it, &#8220;Yeah, I&#8217;m sure this is homogenized more than a bit, but I can see the elements that probably tie back to Ellis, and I&#8217;m pretty sure I know what the comic was like.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Then, this evening, I read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Red-Warren-Ellis\/dp\/140122346X\">the graphic novel<\/a> that &#8220;inspired&#8221; the movie, and &#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Well, I was wrong. \u00a0I can see the connection, but, honestly, not only was the movie (a) more entertaining, (b) of longer duration, and (c) less expensive, but (d) I&#8217;d recommend, in lieu, the TPB collections o<em>f The Losers<\/em> for something more akin to the themes Ellis introduces then just tosses off in this 3-issue mini-series (half the TPB is the script + rough graphics of the first issue).<\/p>\n<p>The comic series isn&#8217;t bad, but it&#8217;s a brief over-the-top blip vs. the movie &#8212; which is, honestly, a reverse of the usual way these things work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Whilst Kitten was off on a Girl Scout outing, Margie and I, the afternoon free, went off and watched RED (official site).
