{"id":19553,"date":"2010-12-14T06:43:47","date_gmt":"2010-12-14T13:43:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=19553"},"modified":"2010-12-15T07:25:56","modified_gmt":"2010-12-15T14:25:56","slug":"nicer-twitter-archive-links","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2010\/12\/14\/nicer-twitter-archive-links.html","title":{"rendered":"Nicer Twitter archive links"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve been using <a href=\"http:\/\/crowdfavorite.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/twitter-tools\/\">Twitter Tools<\/a> for quite some time to daily archive my Twitter feed to this blog (which, reviewing the last year, is how I handled most stuff that was personal in nature). \u00a0\u00a0That&#8217;s worked out pretty well, aside from TT&#8217;s tendency to sometimes be a little &#8230; enthusiastic in posting an archive (&#8220;I liked this post so much, I think I&#8217;ll do it five more times!&#8221;).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19554\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19554\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/secret_code.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19554\" title=\"The Secret Code!\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/secret_code-300x222.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"222\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/secret_code-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/secret_code.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19554\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">URL shorteners are convenient, but, ultimately, dangerous.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>One thing I&#8217;ve disliked about the process, though, is that it brings over all the URL-shortened bit.ly links from Twitter (I use bit.ly in general, though the dislike would be true for pretty much any URL shortener) as-is. \u00a0So if I link to something and it translates out to http:\/\/bit.ly\/xYz123, that&#8217;s the link that shows up in the archive. \u00a0So as long as bit.ly is around, all will be well, right?<\/p>\n<p>I really hate using URL shorteners for archival purposes, as they serve as a weak link; if bit.ly were to go out of business today &#8212; do you know their business model and financial health? &#8212; it seems like half the Internet would suffer from bit rot. \u00a0Heck, I&#8217;m uncomfortable that a lot of the links through Unblogged Bits come across as Google proxies, let alone the ones in the Tweets are bit.ly proxies.<\/p>\n<p>Also, they&#8217;re a minor security hazard &#8212; unless you are using a tool or browser plug-in that will translate them for you, you really don&#8217;t know if you&#8217;re going someplace legit or http:\/\/ihaveinfectedyourmachine.now\/trojan.php.<\/p>\n<p>Kelson Vibber recently put together a TT add-on, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperborea.org\/journal\/nicelinks\/\">Twitter Tools NiceLinks<\/a>. \u00a0This add-on translates bit.ly links into a link that gives you the underlying URL, displayed with the page title as the link text. \u00a0E.g., it changes \u00a0&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\ufeff\ufeffCheck out this site:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/9MhKVv\">http:\/\/bit.ly\/9MhKVv<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8230; into this &#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Check out this site:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hyperborea.org\/flash\/\">Flash: Those Who Ride the Lightning<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Nice. \u00a0I&#8217;ve been <a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/heroes\/2010\/10\/nicer-links.html\">using this at Blog of Heroes<\/a> for the last month (to the extent that I&#8217;ve been posting anything over there, ahem, yes, I know) and I think it&#8217;s worked well.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve implemented here, too, with a modification (yes, I modified the PHP myself, woo-hoo): rather than giving the page title or site name as the link text (which sometimes can be very long and ugly and textually inappropriate), I just have it generating the nice, compact word &#8220;Link&#8221; as the link text over the URL. \u00a0The page\/site title show up as a title attribute for the link; hover the mouse over one and see. And the URL for the link shows up down in the status line of your browser.<\/p>\n<p>It seems to have run fine last night.
