{"id":19932,"date":"2011-01-23T21:24:56","date_gmt":"2011-01-24T04:24:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=19932"},"modified":"2014-11-06T08:19:06","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T15:19:06","slug":"thirteenth-day-game-day-review","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2011\/01\/23\/thirteenth-day-game-day-review.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Thirteenth Day&#8221; Game Day Review"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/monopoly.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-19933\" title=\"Monopoly\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/monopoly-300x285.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/monopoly-300x285.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/monopoly-650x619.jpg 650w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/monopoly.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>We had a decent group over for the post-Twelfth Night Game Day (Our Motto: &#8220;Eat Leftovers While You Play &#8212; Please!&#8221;). \u00a0Bruce stayed over from the party, and Mary and Stan, and Jackie (with Kaylee), and Randy all came over, too. \u00a0Katherine participated part of the time (the rest, keeping Kaylee entertained, bless &#8216;er).<\/p>\n<p>It was a good opportunity to pull out some games received over the holidays. \u00a0The playlist included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Password <\/strong>&#8211; Margie and Bruce totally demolished Katherine and me.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B003D3M78O\/\">Infunitum<\/a><\/strong> (NEW) &#8211; A game I got Margie at Christmas, it&#8217;s sort of like Scattergories but with a lot less rigor. \u00a0Based on a selected category (&#8220;Star Wars characters,&#8221; &#8220;Female movie heroes,&#8221; &#8220;Places you live in other than a house&#8221;), everyone spends a minute writing as many answers that fit as they can. \u00a0Scoring is for unique answers within the group &#8212; but the rules are a bit vague as to what constitutes &#8220;unique&#8221;. \u00a0Probably best played after a beer or three, we had fun but tended to overanalyze. I won this one.<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"font-weight: bold;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B001BZKSCS\/\">Trans America<\/a><\/strong> (NEW) &#8211; A railroad building game, it&#8217;s got a lot of the plusses and aspects of such games while being pretty fast-playing. \u00a0Luck (of the initial draw) plays a role, but figuring out when best to join up with someone else&#8217;s line (which can help you link to your cities &#8230; but also helps them link to theirs) is one of the key strategic decisions. \u00a0Good game. \u00a0I expect we&#8217;ll be playing it regularly. \u00a0Mary won this one, vs. Bruce and me.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Settlers of Catan<\/strong> &#8211; Jackie wangled the rest of the group into this, playing the basic rules. \u00a0Stan won, as I recall.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B000UC8BPE\/\">Unspeakable Words<\/a><\/strong> (NEWish) &#8211; We played this at Dave-a-palooza, too. \u00a0It&#8217;s a fun game of building unique words out of your hand &#8212; but also having to gamble against the score you get on a D20 to avoid losing a &#8220;Sanity Point.&#8221; \u00a0The Cthulhuesque trappings are only that; the game could be rebranded in any number of ways. \u00a0Diverting and fairly quick to play, but nothing to go out of your way to buy. I barely won with a bit of my sanity left.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B002IUFSPM\/\">Castle Panic<\/a><\/strong> (NEW) &#8211; A co-op game that is less varied in its contests than Shadows Over Camelot (the gold &#8212; or lead &#8212; standard for such things), but which really does require seriously cooperative play to find of monsters charging in from the forests around the castle walls. \u00a0Katherine, Randy, Stan, Mary and I played two games of this, losing the first one badly, barely winning the second. \u00a0I think we&#8217;ll be playing it again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Good times. \u00a0My only regret is that, after the Party Saturday and Game Day Sunday &#8230; tomorrow is (sigh) Monday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We had a decent group over for the post-Twelfth Night Game Day (Our Motto: &#8220;Eat Leftovers While You Play &#8212; Please!&#8221;). \u00a0Bruce stayed over from the party, and Mary and Stan, and Jackie (with Kaylee), and Randy all came over, too. \u00a0Katherine participated part of the time (the rest, keeping Kaylee entertained, bless &#8216;er).
