{"id":20907,"date":"2011-05-01T18:29:46","date_gmt":"2011-05-02T00:29:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=20907"},"modified":"2011-05-01T18:34:16","modified_gmt":"2011-05-02T00:34:16","slug":"the-technological-ramifications-of-gender-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2011\/05\/01\/the-technological-ramifications-of-gender-politics.html","title":{"rendered":"The technological ramifications of gender politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Actually, it&#8217;s just a funny, possibly sexist (though cutting both ways) bit of email humor that crossed my inbox:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>A Spanish teacher was explaining to her class that in Spanish, unlike English, nouns are designated as either masculine or feminine.\u00a0 &#8220;House&#8221; for instance, is feminine: <em>la casa<\/em>. &#8220;Pencil,&#8221; however, is masculine: <em>el lapiz<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>A student asked, &#8220;What gender is &#8216;computer&#8217;?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Instead of giving the answer, the teacher split the class into two groups, male and female, and asked them to decide for themselves whether &#8220;computer&#8221; should be a masculine or a feminine noun. Each group was asked to give four reasons for its recommendation.<\/p>\n<p>The male group decided that &#8220;computer&#8221; should definitely be of the feminine gender <em>(la computadora)<\/em>, because:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>No one but their creator understands their internal logic;<\/li>\n<li>The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else;<\/li>\n<li>Even the smallest mistakes are stored in long term memory for possible later retrieval; and<\/li>\n<li>As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The female students, however, concluded that computers should be masculine <em>(el computador)<\/em>, because:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>In order to do anything with them, you have to turn them on;<\/li>\n<li>They have a lot of data but still can&#8217;t think for themselves;<\/li>\n<li>They are supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they <em>are<\/em> the problem; and<\/li>\n<li>As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer, you could have gotten a better model.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 *<\/p>\n<p>Yes, there&#8217;s all sorts of awful there, but it engendered enough chuckles here to be worth blogging.<\/p>\n<p>For the record, <em>la computadora <\/em>is feminine, but <em>el ordenador <\/em>is masculine. Both seem to be used for &#8220;computer&#8221; (and provoke some mild controversy between proponents one way or the other).
