How did/will you tell your children about sex and childbirth and at what age?

With a great deal of nervousness and too much detail …

I have no idea, actually, but the principles by which I want to do so are:

Tell The Truth. I mean, fine, Stork Myths go right alongside Santa Claus. But when you get serious about the question, answer truthfully.

Keep It Simple. Don’t go overboard on detail, particularly about part names. If they ask, tell them.

Give It Context. I have no problem in a reasonable amount of preaching related to sexuality, especially about personal responsibility. Not scare tactics, really, nor “God will hate you if you do this,” but more along the lines of there being more to sex than simply getting your rocks off.

It’s a Process, Not an Event. I.e., there’s not One Big Talk, but an ongoing dialog about things, at the kid’s level, over time. Being open to opportunities.

There, I’ve been a good manager and provided the guidelines. Margie, can you actually implement it …?

2. How old were you when you found out about sex and how did it happen?

I started receiving reading materials on the subject from my folks … hmmmm, we were still in Diamond Bar, sex ed in school was in the 6th Grade, so probably about there.

School sex ed was all about plumbing. And, of course, it was not co-ed, which was probably appropriate, but, frankly, I think that the information content ought to be the same between the two groups. Guys need to know about gals, and vice-versa. Just without all the giggling.

Home sex ed was largely a matter of being provided age-appropriate reading material, and The Talk. The Talk took place at my Dad’s convenience, while I was in the middle of watching something on TV, and I was rather impatient to be done with it, because, frankly, I’d read the books and knew what I needed to know.

Well, of course, I didn’t, but some things one only learn’s on one’s own.

Prior to all this ed, I had an extremely rudimentary knowledge, bolstered slightly by some clippings from Hustler that one of the kids snuck into school.

3. What was the most shocking thing that you ever discovered about sex? (Shocking at the time that you discovered it, not necessarily shocking now.)

That it was not the be-all of relationships, otherwise it would be the end-all.

4.
