{"id":2293,"date":"2002-07-16T06:35:12","date_gmt":"2002-07-16T11:35:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/?p=2293"},"modified":"2002-07-16T06:35:12","modified_gmt":"2002-07-16T11:35:12","slug":"lets_call_the_w","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2002\/07\/16\/lets_call_the_w.html","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s call the whole thing off"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The perils and pitfalls of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/elsewhere\/journalist\/story\/0,7792,730805,00.html\">translating from Arab to English<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"block\">Searching the BBC&#8217;s vast website for articles about Colonel Gadafy recently, I found just three mentions of his name.<br \/>\nAs far as the BBC is concerned, this may be three times too many, since its approved spelling of the Libyan leader&#8217;s name is &#8220;Gaddafi&#8221;. <br \/>\nHere at the Guardian, on the other hand, our policy is to call him Gadafy &#8211; something we have succeeded in doing 325 times on our website. <br \/>\nFor good measure, we have also managed to write Gaddafi 42 times, Gadafi eight times, and Gaddafy and Qadhafi twice each. <br \/>\nIf given a completely free choice in the matter, I would much prefer to call him Colonel Qadhdhaafiy because that spelling, besides being more faithful to the original Arabic, accurately reflects the eccentricity of the man. <\/p>\n<p>Not to mention the whole Usama\/Osama debate &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><small>(Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.io.com\/~riddle\/language\/?item=20020712\">Prentiss<\/a>)<\/small><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The perils and pitfalls of translating from Arab to English.
