So in the midst of all the Bush pronouncements on restoring confidence to the economy and cracking down on corporate offenders, where’s Dick Cheney<\/a>? After all, it was his business acumen as CEO of Halliburton that was a major rah-rah point during the 2000 election.<\/p>\n

Cheney\u2019s tenure at Halliburton raises some of the issues that have enraged investors in companies such as Global Crossing and Enron: big fish making millions from stock sales while small-fry shareholders and employees get swallowed. Cheney\u2019s response? \u201cWe don\u2019t discuss Halliburton issues,\u201d says Mary Matalin, Cheney\u2019s chief political aide. \u201cHis view is that it would be a distraction from what he\u2019s trying to get done here.\u201d Cheney\u2019s office has been referring questions to Halliburton, which doesn\u2019t appreciate the attention. \u201cAt some point, [Cheney] is going to have to address these [accounting] questions,\u201d says Wendy Hall, a Halliburton spokeswoman. <\/p>\n
