Or the transcontinental railroad, for that matter. Would not have happened. Yet building those things eventually made a whole lot of business enterprise possible that would not have been possible otherwise.&#8221; And any company that tried to do so would have its CEO outsted by the Board, or its Board sued by the stockholders. Because the profit-and-loss justification that Stossel writes about isn&#8217;t for society, or for decades-long investment payback, but for how things will look at the end of the Fiscal Year, or at the end of this Quarter. Which may (or may not) be a great way to run a company, but is a terrible way to run a country.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/feedproxy.google.com\/~r\/Three-starDavesSharedItemsInGoogleReader\/~3\/o-iI_H6vGgA\/obama-clears-bp-for-new-gulf-oil.html\">Obama clears BP for new Gulf oil drilling<\/a> &#8211; So (a) the environmentalists will have fits, (b) the oil companies will realize they can have &#8220;one [catastrophic] incident&#8221; and still do business, (c) BP can continue on as it has, and (d) the GOP will still attack Obama as anti-oil, anti-jobs, and pro-Big Government.  So this is a good thing, Mr President &#8230; why?<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/feedproxy.google.com\/~r\/Three-starDavesSharedItemsInGoogleReader\/~3\/q3-0mSvxTr4\/\">Those Who Don\u2019t Remember History . . .<\/a> &#8211; When GOP candidates talk about getting the government &#8220;off our backs,&#8221; one has to ask whose backs they are most on &#8230; and why.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/feedproxy.google.com\/~r\/Three-starDavesSharedItemsInGoogleReader\/~3\/eH3Llsi5l7c\/\">Herman Cain Says Electrocuting Immigrants Was A Joke<\/a> &#8211; At best, it shows a tone-deafness that calls into (further) question his suitability as a candidate.  When you tell a misunderstood joke as the CEO, everyone laughs nervously.  When you tell one as the President, some people rush off to follow the order, others get ready to react to it.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/feedproxy.google.com\/~r\/Three-starDavesSharedItemsInGoogleReader\/~3\/xZdIMHwFVos\/\">The Taj Mahal Is Collapsing<\/a> &#8211; Yikes!  It&#8217;s definitely on my list to see, but no idea when I will make it back to India to do so.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/feedproxy.google.com\/~r\/Three-starDavesSharedItemsInGoogleReader\/~3\/V5j3jls7LME\/p14\">BlackBerry cuts made roads safer, police say (The National)<\/a> &#8211; That&#8217;s &#8230; a very interesting, inadvertent experimental result there.
