{"id":23203,"date":"2011-10-27T00:25:25","date_gmt":"2011-10-27T06:25:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/?p=23203"},"modified":"2014-11-06T11:00:58","modified_gmt":"2014-11-06T18:00:58","slug":"star-trek-the-original-series-rewatch-season-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2011\/10\/27\/star-trek-the-original-series-rewatch-season-1.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Star Trek: The Original Series&#8221; rewatch &#8211; Season 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/star-trek-kms.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-23207\" title=\"Star Trek - Kirk, Spock, and McCoy\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/star-trek-kms-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/star-trek-kms-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/star-trek-kms.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>So I decided a little while back that part of my Formal Upbringing of The Girl would have to consist of initiating her into the world of <em>Star Trek<\/em>. \u00a0Or <em>The Original Series<\/em> (TOS), at least. \u00a0Not only was this an amazingly formative part of my own youth (including the infamous &#8220;Locking the parents out of the back part of the house because they wouldn&#8217;t let me stay up and watch it&#8221; incident), but it remains such a cultural touchstone for us and our social circle that she would be actually <em>deprived <\/em>if she didn&#8217;t learn about such memes as &#8220;Dammit, Jim, I&#8217;m a Doctor, not an Auto Mechanic,&#8221; or Spock with a Beard, or &#8220;PAIN!&#8221; or all those kinda \u00a0goodies.<\/p>\n<p>I picked up a Blu-Ray set of Season 1 of TOS, and began to wheedle her into watching it with me.<\/p>\n<p>Now, back in the Olden Days, when I was growing up and dodging dinosaurs and doing my homework on a clay tablet in cuneiform, there was no question that Whatever Dad Wanted To Watch On TV Was What Everyone Got To Watch. \u00a0Not that I&#8217;m bitter, mind you. But things end up differently in our household, and what to watch is more of a communal decision (with Margie usually shrugging unless it&#8217;s to exert veto over something).<\/p>\n<p>So Kay and I end up in sort of a &#8220;Okay, you can watch two <em>iCarly<\/em> episodes, but then we get to watch <em>Star Trek<\/em>.&#8221; \u00a0Followed by much wailing and moaning and gnashing of teeth.<\/p>\n<p>Now, mind you, Katherine actually enjoys Star Trek. Really. But it&#8217;s now become the principle of the thing.<\/p>\n<p>One way I know she likes it, is she chuckles and laughs (or reacts otherwise) as the show is going on, even if she&#8217;s on \u00a0her laptop playing a game (as she usually is). \u00a0Another way I know is because, as we head into Season 2, she&#8217;s wangling to rewatch some of the Season 1 eps.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/sulu-fencing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-23208\" title=\"Sulu fencing\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/sulu-fencing-300x240.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"240\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/sulu-fencing-300x240.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/sulu-fencing-650x520.jpg 650w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/sulu-fencing.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Which ones were her favorites?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>&#8220;Arena&#8221; &#8211; The Gorn is just too frelling cheesy.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The Naked Time&#8221; &#8211; Sulu with a foil! <em>For Honor! The Queen! And France!<\/em><\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Shore Leave&#8221; &#8211; All the stuff with the white rabbit and the black knight are too much fun.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;This Side of Paradise&#8221; &#8211; Spock being all jovial and mellow.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So, for the most part, it&#8217;s the humorous stuff that grabs her (&#8220;The Squire of Gothos&#8221; is another favorite). Which is funny because, though I appreciate the humor, my top 4 would be completely different:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/guardian-of-forever.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-23209\" title=\"The Guardian of Forever (with some oddly coincidental seams in its base)\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/guardian-of-forever-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/guardian-of-forever-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/guardian-of-forever.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>&#8220;City on the Edge of Forever&#8221; &#8211; Plenty of humorous bits, but the most honestly dramatic (vs melodramatic) thing <em>Star Trek<\/em> ever put out there. &#8220;Let&#8217;s get the hell out of here.&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;Errand of Mercy&#8221; &#8211; Klingons, nigh-omnipotent aliens, and a nice twist in the whole question of when you cross the line between courageous resistance and warmongery.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;What Are Little Girls Made Of?&#8221; &#8211; Aside from the awesomeness of Ted Cassidy as Ruk, we get both the &#8220;defeat the computer by outlogicking it&#8221; meme and some very Campbellian SF.<\/li>\n<li>&#8220;The Menagerie&#8221; &#8211; First off, I would have loved to see a much more thoughtful, gritty Capt. Pike <em>Star Trek<\/em>. Not only do we get glimpses of what that would have been like (complete with some delightful uber-mental aliens), but the whole meta-frame that was tacked on about Spock&#8217;s mutiny is a decent episode in and of itself.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>That was a hard list to narrow down, as there are some pretty darn fine S.1 episodes (&#8220;Devil in the Dark, &#8220;The Corbomite Maneuver,&#8221; &#8220;The Naked Time,&#8221; &#8220;Balance of Terror&#8221; &#8230;). \u00a0And Season 2 is right ahead (in fact, we watched &#8220;Amok Time&#8221; tonight).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/star-trek-organia.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-23206\" title=\"Star Trek - remastered shot of the Enterprise in orbit around Organia\" src=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/star-trek-organia-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/star-trek-organia-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/star-trek-organia.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 85vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I can&#8217;t go past without commenting on the reworking of the SFX that was done for the most recent editions of TOS disks. \u00a0When I heard about them, way back when, I was frankly dubious. \u00a0It smacked too much of &#8220;Greedo Shot First&#8221; revisionism.<\/p>\n<p>And yet, I have to say that I&#8217;m impressed. \u00a0The CG FX aren&#8217;t bleeding edge, but they are pretty decent. \u00a0And unlike Lucas&#8217; dicking around with <em>Star Wars<\/em>, the TOS FX updates don&#8217;t actually change the story. \u00a0Most (in S.1 at least) are the space shots, doing much cleaner passby swooshes and orbital bits with the <em>Enterprise<\/em>, and with planets that look like, well, Class M planets, not gas giants or cloudless Earth globes. \u00a0That lends a much more respectable air to the whole production (especially when you get little show-off bits like the shuttlecraft launching, or reflections of the planet&#8217;s color on the ship&#8217;s hull, or a spaceship on visuals that looks like an actual spaceship, not a blurry dot.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond that, though, some of the non-space FX have been replaced. \u00a0The Horta&#8217;s burning through rock walls looks much better. \u00a0The lovely planetside matte shots have been enhanced (and often incorporate CG movement in them). \u00a0Glowing uber-aliens are much more realistically glowing. \u00a0Alien planetscapes often get some sort of &#8220;long shot&#8221; to establish them before going to the sound stage styrofoam boulders and spotlit back canvas.
