{"id":23544,"date":"2011-11-07T20:27:31","date_gmt":"2011-11-08T03:27:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2011\/11\/07\/stop-me-if-youve-heard-this-electoral-argument-before.html"},"modified":"2011-11-07T21:38:46","modified_gmt":"2011-11-08T04:38:46","slug":"stop-me-if-youve-heard-this-electoral-argument-before","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hill-kleerup.org\/blog\/2011\/11\/07\/stop-me-if-youve-heard-this-electoral-argument-before.html","title":{"rendered":"Stop me if you&#39;ve heard this electoral argument before"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One consistent that has cropped up over every presidential election for the past decade or three has been the threat that The Next President Will Select Supreme Court Justices.  <\/p>\n<p>So, with the election just one year away, cue arguments that &quot;we must elect X in order to protect\/change the nature of the court.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>Obama has selected two Justices &#8212; Sotomayor and and Kagan &#8212; but both replaced liberal-moderate Justices (Stevens and Souter &#8212; both appointed by Republicans).  It was Dubya&#39;s appointments (Roberts and Alito) that truly changed the complexion of the Court to what it is today. <\/p>\n<p>That Romney is glorifying those two &#8212; along with Thomas and Scalia &#8212; is to my mind sufficient to oppose his candidacy with vigor. Despite my dissatisfaction with Obama, we can&#39;t afford a single more like that quartet in SCOTUS.<\/p>\n<p>Four of the current justices were born in the 1930s &#8212; Scalia, Kennedy, Ginsberg, Breyer.
